PLS Help, Injection Timing Super Dexta

Had to remove my injection pump today due to a broken bolt which pinches the throttle arm to a shaft on the bottom of the pump. I didn't know the injection pump had timing marks and didn't mark the current location upon removal. I noticed a timing mark on the pump gear once removed, but could not find one on the flywheel by looking in the small removeable cover opposite the injection pump gear. While the pump was off, the gear was rotated while cleaning it. I tried to spin the flywheel to find a timing mark but don't see one, or don't recognize one. I spun the flywheel around 3 times (I had marked a tooth as reference). After attempting to place the pump gear back in place, everything was assembled. Now the tractor won't start. I see a lot of white/grey puffs when the starter is engaged, and it spins freely, but it won't start. I did bleed the lines at the two bolt on the injection pump, however it still won't start. Please help.

To me it's absolutely out of all reason why you took the pump off the engine without beeing sure to align the timing marks. But things happens and I try to help you as good as I can and please excuse my non-perfect english. First lesson is, to turn the engine always clockwise. Clockwise means clockwise when you stand in front of the radiator face toward the radiator.

Step 1: Turn the engine until the exhaust valve on cylinder 1 is fully open.

Step 2: Put a feeler gauge into the gap between rocker and inlet valve. The feeler gauge should fit semi-tight, means it should fill the gap as good as possible without falling out and without clamping to much.

Step 3: Now turn the engine a full turn of 360 degrees.

Step 4: Now you have to pull gently on the feeler gauge while slowly turning the engine. STOP turning the engine when you can pull the feeler gauge out of it's place. That's exactly the position when the inlet valve has closed. And this crank position is 137 degrees before Top Dead Center (TDC).

Step 5: The Minimec pump should inject at 20 degrees before TDC. And we know that the crank shaft is now located at 137 degrees before TDC. You have to turn the engine another 117 degrees. Here's the way to do it: Mark the teeth on the flywheel which is in-line with the nose in the service hole on the clutch housing (use paint or so). Now turn the engine and count the teeth. The marked teeth is theeth # 0. The 39th teeth is your mark. Stop here and turn another halve teeth. That's the position 20 degrees before TDC and this position is the mark "Spill" to use to set the injection pump.

Step 6: Load the shop manual from my website. Go to www.fordson-dexta.de, then "downloads", then "section 4". Use the manual to see how the marks on the pump should be adjusted. NOTE, the gear flange on the pump has 2 marks. Be sure to take the right on. The manual will tell you ...

Is there a method to turning the engine over counter-clockwise? The starter turns it over clockwise as seen from the front of the tractor.
This is the point where I am stuck. Also, our tractor is a 1956, and for some reason there is no timing marks on the teeth of the flywheel, but there is a timing mark on a pump gear tooth. I've always worked on my own cars, but when I took this on for my father, I didn't know what I was getting in to. If it was not for the pinch bolt failure on the linkage arm of the injector pump, I would not be having this prolem. Many thanks for your help sir, the manual sheds a lot of light on the rest of the mechanics of the tractor.

You have to turn the engine clockwise! That was only an importent note for you to be sure to find the correct crank shaft point to set the pump. The marks on the flywhell are not on the teeth, it's stamped into the flywheel itself. The mark on the casting is the mark which should be in-line with the mark on the flywheel. But don't worry, I still heared of other Dexta's who are not marked on the flywheel. So it could realy be, that your Dexta still has no marks on the flywheel. So just do what I have told in the other posting and the engine should run ...

Production of the Dexta's started in late 1957, so your tractor can not be from 1956. The serial would shed some light on it.

what size? Hmm, don't know. Every good mechanic tool box has a fine set of feeler leaves. You have to choose the best fitting leaf.

Do you know which tool I mean?

I had to reinstall the distributor on my dexta (gas).There has to be a timing mark on the flywheel.I THINK YOU MUST HAVE SIMPLY

I have thoroughly looked at all of the teeth. Would the mark be on the flywheel center and not on the teeth? I saw a - mark in the casting, not on a tooth but beyond the teeth about 3/4 in.

Its not on the teeth. should have a horizontal line set into the flat surface right of the teeth and is lined up with a mark on the body.
3 0'clock at inspection hole.
The injector pump has timing marks also, so match the two.Flywheel..20 degrees BTDC for mechanical governors.
You should have three marks, TC. 20 and 26 degrees. Turning the motor clockwise viewing from the front ,it will be the centre. mark.
The marks are within the range of 3.52".
