My apologies for posting another question, but couldn't find the answer in the archives, and I haven't got a book yet.

Can anyone tell me what clearance should be on the tappets of a Super Major?

I hope to get the injectors back today, and would like to give her a whirl.

This is a great site! Tons of information!
Thank you in advance,

Richard.

Intake .015". Exhaust .012". Hot. Let us know how she runs.

Thanks for your help yet again,TNT.

Was straightening out the pushrods tonight, and see one has a flat on the ball end.
Can re-shape and polish, but it made me wonder if piston or valve is a bit mashed.
Have you had any experience of this?

Should I pull head & see, or try her out as is?

Got injectors back. New nozzles should help!

Thanks again,

R.

Not much use pulling the head off because the ball end of PR is on the cam followers so pull the side plate and inspect them all for wear. You obviously will have to set the gaps cold but after it warms up adjust them HOT as per TNT.
IMO the PR bent because the gap was insufficient.
I would replace the defective PR.Ensure they are all equal length.

Richard,
The push rods are supposed to rotate as they go up and down. If they are bent, they usually don't rotate and this causes a flat spot to wear on them. If you don't get them perfectly straight, they still may not rotate. Keep an eye out for some good used ones. I think that you said, in one of your earlier posts, that you drove it home. If you didn't hear any really bad noises then, I would straighten the push rods, adjust the valves, and fire it up.

Thank you kindly Sir.

I'll do as you suggest, but keep eye open for good rods.
It wouldn't take long to change them if I find some good ones later.
Hopefully have her ticking before tonight!

Bendee has a good point. There are other things that can bend pushrods besides starting it with the compression release. Valves that are adjusted way too tight can do it. Bent valves can do it, too. It will probably run fine now. If it doesn't, then you can pull the head off. I don't like to take things apart until I know that they need to be fixed.
