I bought this truck recently and I am asking for a little advice from you veteran Dodge owners, as this is the first Dodge truck I've ever owned. It has a Cummins 12 valve diesel engine with 234K on it, 5 speed, 3.54 rear end, Getrag tranny, Hx 35 turbo, marine injectors, and a straight 4" exhaust from the turbo back, no muffler. Gooseneck ball in bed. I have put about 10K on it already. It runs great. 20mpg solo. Down to 7mpg pulling 20K #. Problems: Ist, engine noise inside cab is unbearable. The exhaust pipe exits out the right side of the truck at the end of the cab. 2nd, this is a 2500, not a 3500. Heavy loads cause the back end to sag noticeably. Questions: Would extending the exhaust pipe to the rear of the truck and putting a muffler on it reduce fuel mileage appreciably? If not, what type of muffler to use? Second, is the main difference between a 2500 and a 3500 the stiffness of the leaf springs? Could I put a set of 3500 leaf springs on this truck without modifications and then have the equivalent of a 3500 rear end? Lastly, are there any tricks or devices I could use to get even better fuel mileage? Thanks guys.

Not sure why this post is in this forum, but 1) extending the exhaust and adding a muffler will not decrease engine noise. The noise is coming from the engine. 2) 2500 and 3500 - main difference is the overloads. 2500"s do not have overload springs. I would add air bags and not mess with the springs to fix the ride and height. You can get a chip (smarty) that may improve fuel a little, maybe 1 to 2 mpg. Probably the best source out there for your Dodge is the Turbo Diesel Register at : Link It sounds like the previous owner has done some mild modifications to the motor. They do make free flowing mufflers that are relatively quiet and I think if you run the exhaust to the back you'll quiet things down. You should probably think about installing an exhaust temp gauge if you don't already have one. That motor is probably the best diesel you can buy in a pick-up, but if you get it too hot just like any motor it will fail. That year truck has mechanical injection which you can make several adjustments to if you think you need more power or better fuel economy. Once again check the link above. I've got a 96 Dodge and we regularly load it with 55 to 60 bales of hay and it does alright(not much sag in the back) I'd try some overload springs.
