Fordson Major Value

Hi,

A friend of mine wants to sell me his Fordson major (not a super). It looks rough, but we pull started it and it ran. The back tires hold air, the front will go flat after about a half hour. The high range works, but I'm not sure about the low range. After running a few minutes, it seemed to idle down good. It puts out black smoke. Anyway, he indicated he wanted $1500 for the tractor. Does this seem like a fair price?

DWol,

Thanks for the information. He wants to sell the tractor to me and we are trying to agree on a fair price. I am concerned about parts availability and the overall value of the tractor (not to mention any possible strains on a friendship).

Tom,
Parts are available and engine kits are quite reasonable, at Approx $800 for a full rebuild kit including a crank. The only thing you really have to worry about is that damn injector pump. The pump alone is worth more than the tractor. It sounds like it is fine, and can be rebuilt if unnecessary ($500 to $1500). Also, it sounds like it is single clutch instead of the two stage which is probably good, because the two stage again can be very expensive if you need a new one. Do some research on this site and you will be able to determine if it is a two stage. Clutches are available either way and again are reasonable as long as you don"t need the pressure plate. Other than that the tractor is built extremely stout, and aside from bearings and seals should last at least 200 years.
Good luck

DWol,

Thanks for the information. My friend and I talked it over and decided to wait a while on the sale. He is moving to a location where he cannot use the tractor so will keep it at my place until we decide on what to do. The tractor appears stout, looks like it would last a long time. It also looks like it had a loader at one time (has a front mounted pump and a tank on the side for fluid).

Try $1500 and see if you get any bites. Its not worth any more from the sound of it. If it doesn"t go lower to $1000. Any running tractor should fetch $1000 even with problems. Just my 2 cents. You could also try to part it out and sell off the pieces which may be worth more than the tractor as a whole, but that is probably a lot of effort.
Good luck
