My fordson super major diesel is over running!! throttle lever has NO EFFECT!! Something must be stuck inside the Simms fuel injector pump- yes? Sometimes I can wiggle the throttle lever back and forth from idle to max (while not runinig) and it will start and idle ok, until I speed it up -then thank god for manual fuel shutoff. must be time to put the simms pump on the workbench. What should I look for? Thanks Vt Joe

Your problem is Re: major is over running!!!!! in reply to vt joe, 10-09-2007 11:11:49
Your problem is relativity simple. Simms pumps for the Major DO NOT use oil. They are lubricated by the diesel fuel, so no oil change there. What the real problem is, very common one, that you either have a governor suction tube that is leaking or broke. If it is not that, the governor diaphragm has ripped. This is located in the vacuum chamber on the front of the IJ pump.

Hi benny2
It sounds like vt joe's tractor has the Simms Minimec pump with the mechanical governor. I don't know very much about them since I don't have one, but I think that they are supposed to be filled with oil.

it is a simms minimec in reply to tiresntracks, 10-09-2007 20:03:35
and I had it off to address a no start problem 2 years ago and found that after removing rear of pump that things were all rusted inside. (dumb me) the ramp was stuck and after much patience I was able to get things clean and operating again. filled with oil and ran well since. Must be time for new oil or take it off again and look inside the back once more The fact that moving throttle lever back and forth b4 starting helps the thing to run better leads me to belive another inspection is in order. what type oil? anyone agree. thanks for responses

Joe - Have you been changing the lubricating oil in that pump at every motor oil change and checking the level between changes? VERY IMPORTANT !!!!!

strange days indeed in reply to vt joe, 10-09-2007 11:34:04
now isn't that strange--went to move the old tractor and exercised the throttle lever thru the full range several times before starting and then everything was fine. must be that throttle rack that some people say. checked oil plug and it was full but not too good looking. it may still end up on the workbench
