Just a message to let everyone know that once I had to pull the tractor appart. I decided to do a total rebuild and I am glad I did. I found the copper showing on all the bearings on the crank and the wrist pins were showing a lot of wear. When I had gotton the sleeves out (which took me a while to do) I realized that that this engine had been rebuilt before. But whoever did it didn"t do much with the crank. Well so far all is apart and cleaned up except the head and I have ordered that from Yesterday"s Tractor. It was the best price I could find in the Charlotte, NC area. In any case the Head is comming complete with everything and I will have a full set of Valves, Valve Springs, Valves seats, and Locks that will be left over form the rebuilt kit I bought. If anyone is in need? I have. Now the task at hand is patience. I tend to get in a hurry when I put things together and will do something wrong like for get a step or put something in backward. So pray that I will do it right and will have this up and running soon. I will try to keep you posted. Walt Allen

I saw the photo of the puller in the book and no.1 couldn"t get one locally. No. 2 didn"t have materials to make it. So I did the smart thing and had a professional do it for me. And I wished I had started with him. It sure would of saved a lot of labor and a whole day of my time. But all said I still had a lot of fun. Walt

Walter,

You are probably already aware but thought I might mention it.

The Dexta type liners will need bored out to the proper specs after they have been pressed in. (As opposed to the Perkins/MF sleeves with the top flange which are already finished bored)

Cheers,

Les

When I took the block to Jack at Carolina Crank (the owner) Who happens not only to have a Ford Dexta but has rebuild several in the past. Their job is to restore Cranks and Engine Blocks. I sent with it the entire Rebuild Kit so he could do just that. Bore all to fit. Thanks for your post. Walt Allen

Yes: Suggest that unless you have the tools of course, That you have the liners pressed out. I spent a lot of time getting mine out and found out while I was doing it that they were replaced ounce before and there was a hole in the water jacket. So I took it to a profesional and they repaired and pressed in the new ones for 125.00. If I had know earlier that is noat a bad price. I also had this place turn the crank and replace the pin barrings on the pistons. They were real good to me. How ever that said. Having the injector rebuilt was a real expensive ordeal. it cost me 1025.00 plus tax. I certianly wasn"t expecting that. But I didn"t have the expertise or the tools to attempt the ordeal so I had to bite the bullet. Hope this helps. Walt Allen

Hi Walter,

Wondering how you managed to get the sleeves out?

Were you able to come up with a puller?

As the motor had been worked on before was curious if the sleeves had an outside flange at the top (Perkins, MF style) or were straight sided (Fordson style)?

Good luck with the rebuild. Look forward to the photos.

Les

Boy were they thick. Evedently the reason is because they were replacements and they came out very hard. I made a jig using a threaded rod with 3/8 steel to pull on and it only bent the steel and pulled it just inside the sleeve. So I started breaking them out with a chisel very carefull not to hit any edges. I was able to get all but the back cylinder out by breaking the sleeves into pieces on one side. once I got a complete line through I had to peel it off the block. I guess I'm to stuborn for my own good. I finally took it to a replace that repairs engine blocks and they were able to get the last sleeve out. They found that they had some kind of sealer on the sleeve because there was a hole in the water jacket. They fixed it for me and pressed in the new sleeves for 125.00. I thought that was a good deal. The owner of Carolina Crank (Jack) said he would have pressed them out for me. I didn't know. Lesson it is cheaper to have the professionals do some things like this than to do it yourself. Although it may have been different if it still had the origional sleeves in. Will keep you posted with progress. I have posted two pictures one of the tractor the other of the engine block. Walt

Walt,

Take some pics of the old girl while you are rebuilding her and post em. You know the old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words".
