My brother has a Fordson Super Major with a 220 ci diesel engine. He has problems with it bending push rods and keeps tweaking it to try to solve the problem. Is this common to this tractor? Also, he needs to find some replacement push rods. The parts link on this web site does not seem to include Super Majors. Anyone know where to get these?

There is usually a reason for push rods bending,
eg. tight valve, siezed rocker or the valve coming
in contact with the top of the piston, due to piston being fitted the wrong way on the conrod.
Fordson push rods can be straightened.
As far as I know the decompession lever was not fitted from the Power Major on. I have seen Fordson engines started using the
decompression lever, without any problems.

Power Major with Decompression Lever in reply to W R, 07-31-2007 17:19:47
Here is a picture of a Power Major with a decompression lever:

They used a decompression lever in all Majors until they came out with the New Performance Super Major or what we would call a Ford 5000 in the U.S.

Thanks,

Scott

Actually, I have a 1963 NPSM (Ford 5000 Diesel) with a decompression lever!

You can see it in this pic.... I think they had them through final production, but I am honestly not sure about the 1964 production year....

No, no decompression lever. He's been checking the fit of the rod and nothing seems like it should cause a problem, but bend they do, and not always the same piston. He'll be using the tractor, running fine, sounds good, and then it happens. He can replace the push rod, but would like to get to the bottom of it to solve the problem.

If you have problems finding good used ones, I feel sure that you can have them measured and crossed with something off another tractor or either have a high performance auto shop get some made for you. May be a bit $$ but at least it'll be running again.

Is he using the decompression lever when he starts the tractor ???

If he is then that is the reason that he is bending push rods. I have never heard of folks bending them other then when using the decompression lever. I have a 59 with the same engine and I still have the original push rods.

The decompression lever is just there to allow a crank to be put in the bolt up front and to "break" the oil seal on a very cold day. It should never be used to start the tractor.

I have no idea were he could get new push rods. I would try searching on google for fordson stuff or call a local boneyard and see if they have a engine they would be willing to sell you. Also might want to check ebay from time to time.
