I have a Fordson Dextra. Having trouble with starting. It appears the Selnoid may not be working. I can bypass it direct with jumper cables but it will not engage. is there a wiring diagram for the electrical system? I wrote this number down from the crank, 957E 75050. I don't know the year. Can you help?

MOLDED AIR INTAKE HOSE Re: Fordson Dextra in reply to Walter Allen, 07-22-2007 17:40:02
Advanced Auto Parts hose with the same bend use P/N (C) 70738 cut 3 inches off each end they both would be near identical. NAPA should have a cross reference for this P/N. From CNH this hose costs $50. from the auto parts store $10. you choose! ;)) If you still want to spend the $50 bucks buy the one from the Auto parts store and send me the other $40 bucks, thank you in advance

The hose is available, I bought one for my Dexta several years back(2-3)I cannot remember where I bought it but if you look on the internet sites they are available. I would use the part number provided in the earlier post and trim to fit because I do remember mine cost approximately $40. Good luck!

Thank you for helping (Woodache). I have located my tractor it is a 1960 957E 7005 w/ diesel. I belive the charging system has been modified because it has an alternator instead of a generator. it also has an on the side selenoid. I believe thats where I have a problem. Thanks again for what you have helped me with. Walt Allen

You would be a welcome member of the board why not sign up there. But lets get something straight right now they are NOT Dextra but Dexta all owners got to know that ;)). Also at any parts house you should look under Ford New Holled in the books NOT Fordson ;((.
And Yes the alt is a mod! Originally they had a positive ground a real pain!

Sorry about the spelling. Will do better in the future. Thanks to your help and the website, I was able to get past the electrical problem. The tractor has a lot of use and is looks abused. But it stll has a lot in her. A friend of my owned it untill about a month ago. It sat for many years unused. I put a battery, Selenoid, Fresh Diesel, and checked out oil and antifreeze. It started right up. I ran it for a short time last night. I got excited! The front tires have rubber rot. will probably have to replace them soon. the guard on the front will have to be replaced. It looks more like a "V" than a guard. Will need to replace gaskets on the oil pan. I have a lot of work planed for it. Do you have any suggestions for preperation that I have missed? Walt

P.S. what is the link to sign up?

Again I would like to thank you for your help. Thanks to you I got it to start up. I let it warm up a little and actually did some clean up with it just idling it along. After about ten minutes I started running into a problem with the speed of the engine increasing. I thought maybe there was a problem with the cable going to the engine. But it wasn"t moving. It kept increasing and increasing. So I shut off the ignition and it didn"t stop. So I began to pull the kill switch. That slowed it down till I could get back to the shop. After I got back I killed it all the way. and noticed a soud coming from the radiator. It was a little low but not out. I noticed that where the throttle is there is a boot of some kind that is rotted out. Not knowing much about disel engines, I would like some help diagnosing the problems. Can you steer me in the right direction. Walt Allen

That is caused by Re: Fordson board Re: Fordson Dexta in reply to Walter Allen, 07-25-2007 11:23:37
Either by an air leak in the governer vacuum lines check them first. Or the governer diaphragm is rotted out and torn. That is made from leather and is a common problem. It is replaceable with the pump left on the engine but is not easy, requires the use of a set of medicinal forceps pliers to reach the clips inside. The diaphragm is EXPENSIVE $150 at least. CNH has them you can try the inet I had found for $90, there.

What does thing look like? There is a 2" hose rotted that comes from where the rod connects back to a large tank like behind the firewall. would that do it? Walt Allen

Walt,
The tank behind the firewall is the oil bath air cleaner. If the hose is rotted off, it will cause the engine to speed up a little bit, but not much. The problem is probably the governor diaphragm in the injector pump, like Woodache said. You should replace the hose and make sure the cup on the air cleaner is full of oil, so you don't suck dirt into your engine.

Boy I sure do appreciate your help. I will need to find this molded hose. I have tried our local NAPA store, they said they couldn't help. Where should I go to find these hoses? Walter Allen

I'm not sure if you can find an original style hose or not. The one on my Dexta looks like its just a piece of flexible radiator hose.
While I was searching for Dexta parts, I found the governor diaphragm in the Tractor Parts section of this site for $42.88

Its in the Tractor Parts section of this site, Yesterdays Tractors. Look in the upper left corner of this page under Market Place. Thats a real good price. I hope its not too good to be true.

This is the start page read it click AGREE ;)).

BY the way the NAPA parts book lists the DEXTA as a DEXTRA you may even here or see it called a DEXTER ;((. Dont worry I did it too, till someone set me straight:)) You will need to be on the look out for a Fordson Major to match. ;)) And Please dont ever Paint the Grill ORANGE! You will never hear the end of that! I dont worry about the grill I dont have one ;(( The Dexta lb for lb is the most fuel economical tractor I have ever had for the work it does. The fuel econ on the Dexta make a 8N ford look like a 470CI Edsel gass guzzler!
