Super dexta pistons

I am a mediocre mechanic at best, but I've managed to get my Dexta down to having the oil pan off. I have the nuts off the connecting rods, but I can only get the pistons up so the first top set of rings are out, then it seems to be stuck. Am I not pushing them up hard enough? I'm using the I&T Shop service manual for this, and all it says is to remove the cylinder head and oil pan first (which i did), then pistons come out...?

You probably should've used a ridge reamer to remove the ridge at the top of the cylinder. Your piston rings are probably hitting that ridge.
You will probably need to use a little persuasion
or tap the piston back down into the sleeve and
use a ridge reamer. You can usually feel that ridge with your fingernails. Hal

I dismantle yesterday a fordson motor and take off the crankshaft and push up the piston easly but before I had clean the top liner with gas.

The super Dexta has liners, but not ordinary dry press-in-out type. The machinist has to peel-bore them out. The liners are pressed in from the top, and most often have adhesive seize. If new liners are pressed in (at the home shop), even when super cooled to drop in, often the liner bulges in the middle and the initial running seizes and binds on first start-up. Therefore, the liners need "bored" out by the machinist before dropping the new piston ring-set in. This is to prevent piston binding. This engine is not good for an in-chassis field rebuild, however--do it right and if you are over 40, it won"t need done again likely in your lifetime.
As for your pistons being hard to get out. With connecting rods off, Go ahead and pull the crank, if you can, and use a large wood dowel and BIG hammer to pop the rings over the top ridge. Most kits come with new liners, pistons and rings, so just get em out.

Agree, there must be a ridge at the top stopping them from coming out.

Indicator of wear is spot on diagnosis.

You can get a tool at local automotive shop that will remove the ridge and enable removal.

May want to think of installing new liners, not sure if the dexter has liners. The little MF 35's which are similar to the dexter have dry liners.

If no liners will have to rebore.

Good luck

Kenneth

I got the pistons out, it was a matter of lining up the crankshaft correctly. The pistons then lifted out the top by hand, fairly easily, I did not notice any scarring on the walls and the rings looked intact. I was planning to just put new rings in and that's it, clean up the valves as well, it was burning some oil, had obvious smoke and would only start with ether, hoping the new rings alone would at least make it a little better...?

may be ridge at top of bore preventing pistons and rings from passing, usually an indication of cylinder wear
