My dad and I were lookign around his farm and noticed he has five Fordson Tractors, anyhting from majors to pwer amjors and he loves them... The only thing he doesn't like about them is in the winter, temperatures anywhere below freezing, the hydraulics quit working? All five are the same way and he has looked through the manual and everyone of them has the correct oil and level of oil... He thought that maybe if he put trans-hydraulic fluid in it would be better but he did that on one and it was the same... Is this just a characteristic of Fordsons or is there something he can do? Can you help my dad keep this great tractors running in the cold Wyoming weather? THanks!

I have a 1963 FSM Live in Nova Scotia Canada, gets quite a bit below freezing here. I run straight 30 weight oil in my diff and gearbox and never had a problem with the hydrulics. I have both a front and rear blade.

The older manuals say to run 80w-90 gear oil in all both the transmission and rear end box. That might be why he is having problem getting hydraulic flow in the winter

I have a Power Major and I run straight weight 40 detergent oil in the read end and gear box. I was having some leaking issues so I chose a heavier weight oil. I ended up having to replace all of the seals anyways. So I could of used a multi - weight oil.

Since you run your tractors in the winter and are in a pretty cold climate I would run 15w - 40 or 20w - 50 in the boxes.

Is the oil cloudy? Due to the lack of positive sealing, moisture from rain/dew will be drawn into the housings over time. In the case of my Dexta which sits outside - just a few months is all it takes. When freezing temps occur, this moisture freezes and forms ice crystals that are suspended in the oil. This immediately plugs the hydraulic filter when the engine is started. Warming the hydraulic section of the gear case to above freezing will restore use of the hydraulics for the day. I use a kerosene fueled solder pot burner for heating up mine. As a side note, I pulled my top cover for the first time(owned for 21 years) and was surprised by the amount of rusting and piting that the moisture has caused over the years. This lead to a lot of wear in the linkages. I had to weld several journals up and ream the linkage holes. I thought it was going back together yesterday but found that the rockershaft bushings are shot and now have to try to get the lift arms off.
