The transmission is located FORWARD of the main transmission adds about 5 inches to length of the tractor. It says HOWARD in large cast letters on the top of the case. The shifter is on the left hand side of the unit. It is not an Everett or a Sherman. The grill/bonnet/engine looks the same as the Fordson Major, 4cyl dsl, Simms pump, starter, fuel pump and filters same. Has a HI/LO shift like the Major. Throttle control on top of console like an N tractor. The position control moves fore and aft, looks like it might have a draft control lever and there are a couple more knobs/valves under the front part of the seat. It does not have drum brakes. Brakes are close coupled to the tranny(sealed?). Can anyone identify? No PICS yet. Thanks in advance. PaulN

Hi;
I worked for Dowdeswell ploughs who took over Howard Rotavators in England. Howard made several versions of the reduction box, originally for use at ultra low speeds for a Fordson Major rotary drainage unit.
Later they made different gear ratio'd sandwich boxes for Fordson Majors, Ford 4000 & 5000, and MF 100 series tractors. Two different ratios were available according to what the tractor would be used for. Most went for vegetable harvesting areas where they needed slower speeds for planting & harvesting.
NO PARTS are available today in England. But the sandwich boxes are high sought after for plowing competition work.
Cheers David

Hi - David in Wales.
I'm still looking for more information on the Howard transmission in my Super Major. The Howards that were installed in the N Series tractors are very fragile and no parts are available here (USA). Probably broken because they were mis-used (like pulling stumps). I'm wondering if the ones in the Super Majors are also fragile. How is this trans used for pulling? Is it used for tractor pull competition? Have you any clue as to where I may find documentation/specs for this transmission?

Thanks for the info. What year might an early Super Major be? Was the Howard sold as an option? What is the reduction on this transmission? I assume it does not affect PTO speed. Is that correct? The tractor is in western Washington.
Thanks again PaulN

I bought a tractor with a Howard unit on it also. I found some literature which indicated a gear reduction of 3:1. I don't believe it affected the PTO. Mine was on a Ford 841.
