Need help from the Fordson group - I'm mostly a N guy.
Got the Major (4cyl diesel Simms pump) with the stuck brake cranked today after change of all filters, fluids and the like. Radiator was dry.
Turned it thru several times with the starter hopefully to prelube. Fired up quickly when fueled. Ran rough and idled high, was probably around 800-1000 RPM. What should the idle be? Still don't have any manuals. But now the REAL problem. When advancing the throttle there is fire out of the exhaust stack(straight piped), it is running rough and popping with blue/white smoke. Blue/white smoke also at idle. Ran long enough to bring the temps up at idle and then it was shut down. Now the BAD part, the radiator has loads of oil mixed with the water. Suspect it was in the radiator already but don't really know. There is no water in the oil. The blue/white smoke sounds like headgasket to me(I hope). However the grandson of the previous owner said they had experienced overheating problems. With as much oil as was in the radiator I wonder if the Fordson Major blocks/heads have ever internally cracked from the oil side to the water side. I've only seen that once and that was in one of my gasser boat engines. I would really appreciate help and opinions from the Fordson Forum members who know a lot more abut this tractor than I do. I can't find the serial numbers yet but have found some casting numbers. Will post them soon. I don't even know what year the tractor is at this time.
Thanks in advance PaulN.

Sounds like Head Gasket most other problems would let water in oil. when you have the head off check sleeves they should be above the block .002 to .005 inches also the sleeves are sealed with "o" rings if you can determin which cylinder the gasket is bad on you may want to pull the sleeve. mine was run long enough to burn the "o"rings.
Good Luck my 56 backhoe has been a super workhorse

Paul, just a suggestion, pull the valve cover and make sure you don't have any bent push rods and have to correct valve clearances. I had 3 bent push rods, 2 were bent so bad they weren't even under the rocker arms(one dead cylinder).

Also check that fibre disk that connects the injector pump to the cam drive...This is your timing...Disk does and will break. $85.00 from CNH dealer...

My dsl major is having the same problem, EXACTLY.
replaced my headgasked AND all 4 injectors , checked all timing. It still does the same thing. Burned valves maybe for me.

Paul,
Sounds like we have the same story. I started with a 47 8n, which I still use almost every day and is a wonderful tractor, but unfortunitly the little 8n has many limitations. My 2nd tractor is a 64 super major and from there I was sold. 4 majors later, I don't really know where I am going. Anyway, the major is, as someone else put once in a post, "built like an Iowa class battleship". There are many, many positive storys about the majors. Anyway, I would tend to agree with jim on this one, it is probably a head gasket. You won't know until you take her apart and look at everything. Somehow oil got into your radiator, and is very doubtfull that someone poured it in. So you need to check everywhere that the oil could have gotten in and that will narrow it down. The head is an easy check and will allow you to look arround for other areas. There are cases of blocks fracturing and what not, but are not that common. Also I remember someone talking about the sleaves moving arround for some reason which could also be what is causing your oil issue.
Good luck and welcome!

Similar problem when I first got my Major years ago. I had many problems as it was run hard and put away wet, but after getting repairs I've never had a better tractor. First, start engine and let run a little then take off radiator cap. I suspect you have a blown head gasket probably between two cylinders. Look in your radiator and see if it's blowing water from the exhaust stroke. Mind would blow it out the fill hole five feet. I checked the head and cylinder walls and didn't see any thing out of order so I just changed the head gasket. As too popping and cracking that will go away (some)when you do the following:
1) Clean up head and top of pistons.
2) Replace head gasket and torque correcly.
3) Ajust your intake & exhaust per specs.
4) After getting to temp., re-ajust valves.
5) Time per specs. This includes your injector pump.
6) Peplace straight pipe with pipe and muffler as a diesel will always pop and crack with a straight pipe.

I run mind with a straight pipe also, but when you get that major under a load it will pull and sound like no other.
