I have a 1952 Fordson Major Diesel that smokes out of the exhaust something fierce. I have set the timing as best i can using a IT manual, setting it on the compression stroke at TDC the problem i have is that the tab with the timing mark that mounts at the alternator bolt, is missing but i centered the timing mark on the pulley at center of the two bolt holes and then set the mark on the on the injector cam and the engine runs well, it just smokes. I also cleaned the air filter. It has a new rebuilt Simms injector and I'm thinking that it's probably the/a injector. which leads me to my next question where can i get these injectors rebuilt. Any good places?

This year of Fordsons did not time using the Flywheel, i wish they did, it would be a lot easier. There is a notch on the main pulley and suppose to be a pointe mounted at about two o clock looking at the front of the engine. From the picture i found in a IT service manual it looks like it uses one of the alternator studs and another bolt to attach. If anyone out there has a pointer i sure would like to buy it. Once lined up on the comp. TDC you then line up the marks on the fuel pump. I'm still waiting for the injectors to return from being rebuilt, and hopefully this will help the smoking. Thanks for all the input it's appreciated.

Swede, I've been visiting this site for about three years, and the question of smoking Fordsons has come up quite regularly. It appears that the archives go back only about a year or so, but I have read several posts on this issue over the years. If your injectors turn out to not be the problem, you may want to peruse the old postings to see if you can find any information. One of the most common questions by those in the know (and it seems that one of the most knowledgeable of all, Majorman, no longer visits here) regards the color of the smoke: is it blue, white or black. Each tells you something different. I have a 62 SM that smokes on deceleration and shutdown, and nothing I have done has made a bit of difference, including a new injector pump and new injectors. Because it runs clean at speed, I am left to conclude that I use the tractor too lightly, and don't really ever clear out the carbon deposits. There are many reasons for smoking engines, so don't lock yourself into only one solution. Best of luck.

I think I would check some other stuff before pulling injectors.

Is the air cleaned plugged up ??? Mine was full of a grease like substance all the way to the top. Take the "snorkle" off of the air intake and fire her up and she is she smokes.

Are you setting the timing at 23 degrees BTDC using the door on the back of the sump and the lines on the injection pump and coupling ???

Start her up and take the fuel line out of each injector while she is running and see if the smoking continues or stops ??

Is you diesel fuel old, possibly gelled up ?? Has the fuel filter and the fuel tap in the tank been checked ???

Has she been worked hard lately, if not I would "work er like you stole her".

i just found a place this week and ordered them, they have you send in your old ones and send you rebuilt ones, after core charge they were $70 each.
I have ordered other parts from him and was happy.

I also found a source right after i posted this and sent them in. K&S in Schofield Wi. They said to send in and they rebuild and turn around in about 2 days and seemed very familiar with major diesels. I"m still a little in the dark as to whether the timing is correct but hopefully the excessive exhaust will clear up and that the injectors were my problem.

I would check and make sure you have it timed right, like morningwood said. There shouldn't be a timing pointer bolted to the alternator bolt. There should be a pointer on the injector pump housing and a mark on the drive coupling. There should be a round hole, that may or may not still have a cover on it, on the flywheel housing/oil pan under the back of the right frame rail. Through that hole you should be able to see the degree marks on the flywheel.

One more thing that I forgot to mention. Make sure the excess fuel button isn't stuck. With the engine running at about half-throttle, pull the stop knob out enough to slow the engine down, but not kill it, then push it back in. If it stops smoking, the fuel button was probably stuck, and needs to be cleaned and oiled.

I believe you are on the right track for this and other models. There are primer injectors which get out of whack. Sometimes they seize closed and in older manual prime type folks just simply live with hard startings in cold. Then there are the ones that seize partially open.So after doing all required mtc tuning etc one must check this possible dribble of excess fuel.

Well i got the injectors back from being rebuilt. Installed and still smokes. I really need to find a timing pointer that mounts on the front of the engine near the alternator and is suppose to line up with a notch on the front pulley. I think if i had this i'd be more accurate on my timing. If any one has one i'd gladly buy it reasonable, there is not an access to time with the flywheel, that was later models than my 1952.

For some reason, I thought your Major was newer than that. You might be able to find a pointer here. Rippee's Used Tractor Parts (573)431-5939
