My Fordson (supermajor I think) has a starter that is engaged by a rod pushing a plunger on top. Can it be easly converted to a starter using a selnoid so I can engage it with a key instead of the plunger?

I don't know, but it ain't that simple.

That "plunger" on top of the starter is a soliniod switch. The rod not only actuates the soloinoid (which makes the starter spin), it also actuates the mechanical drive which engages and disengages the starter to the flywheel.

I've never tryed to change one cause in 30 or so years of tinkerin on a bunch of Fordson Majors I've never seen even one with a bad starter drive.

This starter was working when I got the tractor but soon quit. The plunger seems to be messed up but I'm not sure that's the problem. It is also wired through a food switch (similar to the older Ford tractor). I bypassed the foot switch but still didn't get the starter to engage. I was thinking if the plunger was messed up and i could bypass it with a different type sylenoid that it would be a little easier to use but if not I will just fix the plunger or replace the plunger. thanks for your help. Jerry

I solved this problem on my 1960 Dexta by removing the plunger type switch and running the wirs to a keyed automotive type switch that I installed on the dash panel. Now, all I have to do is hold down the lever to engage the starter drive and turn the key. It works great! It is also a theft deterrent!!

The Dextas might be wired up a little different than my FPM but you cannot start my FPM without the key in the ignition and turned to the right.

If the person really wanted the machine they could take off the starter cable and rig it up to a battery and start it that way.

it is very simple, the starter from a ford 4000 replaces the original.i have a 61 s/m,and a 60 p/m.it works fine.you hook 1 wire to the battery, and 2 wires to the starter(key, button)switch.disregard the old rod.when i want to start mine i just push the button and she fires off. cw
