I did some trading and now have a major.
badge on grille says " live lift Live drive"
badges on hood sides say"Fordson Super Major"
the Sn on engine block(near injector pump) is 1501397 indicating a 1959 POWER major.
It has 2 stage clutch but the pto needs to be engaged to make the 3pt lift work.
possibly engine swapped?? But why no live lift??

SORRY SOME OF THAT INFO WAS WRONG. here it is as follows
badge in grille says "Live PTO LIVE Hydraulics"
Badges on hood sides DO say it is a POWER MAJOR.
sn on engine above injector 1501397 indicate 1959 POWER MAJOR, Does have 2 stage clutch
Why does the PTO need to be on to use the 3 pt lift?

I have the same exact tractor, actually my serial number is not far off from yours.

Do you a raised PTO in the back ?? If so you would just need to disengage the lever behind the seat which operates the raised PTO. If you do not have a raised PTO the PTO shaft will just spin.

I would recommend getting a set of manuals from this site. They cover the basic operation and maintenace on the machine.

They are great tractors once you get all of the kinks worked out of them if they have not been taken care of. Easy on fuel and they have lots of power and torque.

My PTO comes streight out the rearend,no step up. besides what you speak of , is not truely live lift as we know it today. live pto yes.

I just expected the "live" lift to be like the jubale, oliver 550, ford 5000. etc. Not dependent upon the pto being enguaged.

Sounds like the original owner of your machine skimped and did not order the raised PTO which would of given you what you are talking about.

Another thing to remember that these machines are from 1959 and they were "cutting edge" for there time.

That is how they are, live hydraulics meaning you can stop forward travel but still make the hydraulics lift, but you have to have the pto running.
