PTO Oil Leak-Fordson Super Major

My Fordson Major has developed an oil leak on the PTO Assembly. The oil is leaking from one of the bolts that hold the assembly on to the Axle housing. My owners manual is not helpful in this area. It appears that the PTO assembly is attached to the axle housing by a series of bolts. The bolt where the leak has developed is at the 7 o'clock position when looking at the PTO from the rear of the tractor. This bolt looks like it passes through what I can only describe as a bushing or spacer. The leak is coming from around this spacer/bushing. My questions are: 1) Do I need to remove the PTO assembly to fix the leak? 2) Is there a seal or O-ring in there that is the cause of my problem. 3) If I need to remove the PTO assembly are there any tips or cautions that I need to be aware of? 4) Can anyone tell me where I can get good a service manual for this tractor. I appreciate any and all replies!

Look on Ebay there are manuals there.

The manual I got is titled "FORD Shop Manual FO-201.

It covers the Super major among others.

It will give you a description how to remove the PTO.

If you are talking about that big part under the tractor, yes there is a O ring in it.

I canniablized a Super major tractor the other day. So I was not too particular. However in order to drop that piece under the tractor that the PTO lever operates into. I pulled the PTO Shaft out from the back and then that piece dropped out once I unbolted it.

Hope this helps.

Kenneth

Kenneth,

My PTO assembly is attached to the rear axle housing. The engagement lever is built in to the unit. It appears that the whole assembly can be unbolted by removing about six bolts. It looks like I need to remove the guard and then several additional bolts. One of these bolts is where the oil is leaking. I need to take a photo and see if I can post it to help me explain what I am tring to describe. Thanks for the info on the manual. I will look for one today.

If it looks similiar to this then it has the Raised PTO. I am not familiar with the Major as shown but have taken off the raised PTO on a Power Major which is very similiar. IN my experience the power major does not have any O rings just a flat gasket where the PTO housing bolts to the rear axle housing. That gasket might be bad. Could replace it or make one using RTV like we did. One helpful tip is to safely park the tractor with the rear higher than the front unless you have plenty of buckets to catch the oil or want to change it anyways. Parking it like that will minimize how much oil comes out when you remove the PTO housing. I hope that helps a little. There are people on this board that know these things alot better than me!!!
