OK, so you guys know...I have never owned and hardly operated a tractor. I have driven (and probably raced) almost all engine driven wheeled vehicles. (and boats) I am good mechanically, but don't know where to start or the lingo to use on a tractor. Now...my dad bought a late 50's Fordson Dexta tractor with a 3 cylinder Perkins deisel. Tractor runs and works great! The lift that lifts the implements on the back (see, this is where i get lingo stupid!) seems to be working wrong. When using the main lever (the one with the adjustable "stop"???) you have to pull it to the very top to get just a few inches of lift...but when you push the lever under the seat all the way down, you get full lift...but it doesnt stay up. So, I have adjusted the bushhog so it rides at a usable height when the main lever is locked all the way up. It seems as though that main lever isnt doing anything until it is at about 80% or so up...is there a possibilty of misalignment on the shaft or wear to the shaft that would cause this? I would appreciate any help, and will understand if you guys would rather not fool with an incompetent as myself! lol The tractor is a real find, i think, since it runs so well. I use it to cut 8 acres next to my house and will use it to groom my 1/10 mile dirt kart racing track if I can get the lift working properly...thanks again!

You're in good company here - some of the guys just don't want to own up to their idiocy. Try Tales for some amusing examples of Murphy's law at work. These old tractors are dirt simple, made to be run and fixed by fairly unsophistocated folks. If you can find and read a manual, and follow simple directions you'll be fine.

You guys are great help! I found the manual where you suggested...THANKS!!...already learned some things and havent even laid hands on the iron since I read the manual. I cant wait to dive in. I never imagined my next custom restore would be a tractor!!! I have done cars, trucks, motorcycles and boats...HAHA!...now a tractor may solidify my place in internal combustion powered vehicle heaven!!! WOOHOO!! (I like to cut up a bit too!) Thanks again, and I look forward to many more answers from you guys. I will get pictures if you are interested. Dave

We had a 9n Ford-Ferguson and I loosened the 4 capscews that held the quadrant then tapped the quadrant to the rear till the implement just began to raise.I would not be surprised if the Dextra may be simular.I would try to get a good shop manuel. You may find they to the left of this post.CENTAUR
