Fordson casting codes-trying ID Major

I have an opportunity to get a Fordson Major Diesel with front loader and scraper, been outside and needs work.

The casting codes are J18Z on engine, J19Z on rear half, and J23Z under the seat. My info does not include Z as valid year code.

I have not yet found the serial number that is supposed to be stamped somewhere, and the ID plate has been painted over.

Any assistance in helping me identify this beast to see if it is worth keeping is appreciated.

Your casting codes give July 18th/19th/23rd 1956 so she looks like an original Fordson Major Diesel.

Serial number is behind the starter on the flange or possibly under No.1 Injector.

Wow! Thank you for the quick response. Do I have to pull the starter to see the number, if it is not under the No. 1 injector? I have looked all around the starter & can not see it. Are there any pictures or drawings available to help clarify the area? Is there another source of casting codes for the Major to get to 1956 for Z? Just entering the Fordson world and trying to find out as much as possible before I commit for sure to take the tractor. Transportation is going to be my main expense before repair and restoration expenses, so trying to make sure that restoration is an achievable objective. I appreciate the help.

Code will be stamped down the flange. It is easy to see but may need a good clean and some of the paint scraped off. Try>Link

She could have had a new block fitted and the number not been transfered.

These are good, strong, simple tractors. Parts are available from Sparex, Vapormatic and Bareco but may need some finding. Also still available from Case New Holland.

Thank you again. I had visited this site and found lots of information, but the Z for 1956 was not there. I found a couple more links that I had missed. I will make another attempt at finding a serial number this weekend. I am encouraged to take on the challenge of fixing her up if I can arrange transportation. Thanks again.

Hey Majorman,

Thank you so much for your assistance in locating the serial number; it was under the #1 injector and had to scub off the paint to see it. Definitely 1956, and this is looking like all original-still 6V as far as I can tell-starter has Made in England on it. Wagner front loader. wiring is broken off of things etc. Still trying to find some way to transport it. Very hard to find tractor transport in the city that is less than the cost of a new car. Later.
