original temperature gauges

I have two different temperature gauges taken from Fordson Major tractors. Here are pictures of them:

third party image
Gauge number 1 (image taken with a scanner)

third party image
Gauge number 2 (sorry about the poor quality of the photo)

My question is which one of the two gauges is original? I'm pretty sure the gauge number 1 is original because it came from the 1955 FMD I'm restoring and I have a reason to believe it has never been changed. I could be wrong though. The number 2 gauge came from a scrap yard and it seems to be a little less rusty on the backside so that could be newer. Or did they use different type of gauges during the production? Maybe a replacement gauge would have had the temperature dial in degrees Celsius rather than in Fahrenheit here in Finland?

Anyway the number 1 contender is missing the glass and the case. The glass was broken anyway and I fitted the inside parts of a new gauge into the old case to achieve a little originality since I couldn't get a new one that would have fitted into the hole in the dash. Bytheway, both of them have a broken capillary sending unit. After I discovered that this kind of gauges can be fixed rather simply by fitting a new sending unit (more about it in this web page: Gauge Repair) I bought that other gauge from the scrap yard so that I could try to fix it and have an original gauge. After I got home I realized that the "new" gauge was different than the "old" one and this led to my question. I think I'll try to restore the number 2 anyway even it if isn't original because it looks original enough to me and it is in quite a good shape. But it would be nice to know which one really is the original one.

TH,

My 55 has your gauge 1 and 53's have gauge 2. They must have switched somewhere in between.

Thanks for the answer, Miles. It just occurred to me that maybe the Diesel and petrol/gas models had a different gauge? The number 1 is from a diesel but I don't know about the other. How about your tractors Miles?
