I have a 58 major and today while I was brush hogging I noticed that the engine rpms seemed to jump to a higher than normal operating range. When I was in lighter grass I would have to reduce the thortel and then in heaver stuff bring the throtel back up. When I shut the engine off and restarted it the rpms seemed to be normal for a time and then would jump back up. After looking at my manual it sounds like this may have to do with the govener. Has any one else experienced this problem or does any one have any thoughts on this matter. Thanks for any and all help.

Benny is correct, you probably have a cracked or loose governor vacuum line. Along with a jumpy idle, you may experience excessive smoke. Check both lines from the top of the injector pump, all the way to the throttle valve part of the intake. Unless youve swapped for a minimec pump which is mechanically governed, you should have a Simms pnuematically governed pump. Those two steel lines are CRUCIAL to your major running efficiantly and correctly.

Well it may be Re: 58 Major engine running too fas in reply to Paul Booth, 08-29-2006 21:52:28
Just the other day I had the same problem. I found the suction tube that goes to the govener, had cracked off from old age and vibration, just above the acorn compression fitting. This tube is the lower one on the manifold and the inside one on the govener. It also could be a leaking diaphram.
