Can someone help me?
I loaned my reliable old fordson to a friend today. They drove for a while with the clutch brake(handbrake) on and now it wont move at all. When we tried later to tow it it drags the right wheel in a reverse direction , meaning the wheels are now trying to rotate in opposite directions. I cant understand how the handbrake could cause this. When you try to drive, it stalls agianst the gearbox or diff suggesting it may be stuck in gear but this doesnt seem to be the case. Any ideas before i start dismantling would be appreciated. Thanks

If the rear wheels are trying to rotate in opposite directions then the problem has to be in the differential unit.

NEVER loan your tractor to anyone who knows less about it than you do, who has less money to fix it than you do, and ain't your Mom.

DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE OR TOW IT if it is the transmission handbrake at fault!

The handbrake plates have seized on due to being driven with the handbrake on. Your only option is a split at the clutch, remove the PTO shaft and bottom gears, take off the selectors and draw the inner gearbox out to get at the handbrake.

It is possible to smash the inner gearbox housing by trying to drive or tow the tractor and these are nearly impossible to get.

Its not a bad job but is heavy bits and needs care, time and plenty of wooden blocks.
