listen to these symptoms

when cold the tractor runs great, as it gets warm revs start to drop ever so slightly until it reaches running temp, then it completely looses power and finally stalls. Let it cool for no more than 1 minute and it starts and runs smooth for about 30 to 45 seconds until it reaches high temp. again. Is it possible that the valves are set just at the point that they're closed enough when cold then slowly hang open as they heat. Anyone see anything like this before, there is no popping or backfiring, also this is a deseil.

I have good news and bad news.
The good news is this could be valves adjusted too tight and is an easy fix.
The bad news is this is exactly the same symptoms my '63 Super Major displayed just before the crankshaft completely siezed up solid.

Good Luck!

Have you looked at the basics:

1) Clogged fuel filter, tank and canister

2) Clogged air mesh in you air filter. You can take the snorkle off of to the intake to verify. Make sure you do not over rev the engine when you have the pipe off.

3) Fuel Tank opened at least two full turns

too me it sounds like a clogged fuel filter. The reason being is that a clogged fuel filter will let a little bit of fuel go through and that will accumulate in you line to the injeciton pump. Then after 30 - 40 seconds you use that fuel up and cannot get more because of a clogged filter. There are two fuel filters on the tractor, one in the tank and the canister filter.

Thanks,

Scott

Sounds awfully like a seizure on either crank or pistons then.

What tractor are we talking about. Its not a Dexta with a recently overhauled engine that you have not had bored but just honed is it? If so it will be piston seizure.

hi Majorman, we've chatted before, I own 2 majors, this tractor is an oliver white 73 backhoe. This ones got me stumped, I checked valve clearance today and all is well. The damnedest thing happened today while it was running and just ready to die out after running for about 4-5 minutes I cracked open a bleed port on the side case of the inj. pump and the thing ran normal again but of coarse leaked a ton of fuel. As it stands right now we took the inj. pump off and will proceed to open it up hopefully tomorrow.
Ever hear of anything like this.

Hi Ron,

I have had a couple of engines where an injector jammed open and the pressure back put air in the fuel system. Engine would run for a few minutes then the pump would fill with air under pressure.

Also hadthem where the fuel cap vent had blocked and starved them of fuel but this would take a short while.

Have you eliminated possible seizure? You said you have checked all the basics in the fuel system.

all vent lines are clear, the jammed injector sounds possible , how would the engine run? This one sounds great until it starts to stumble. When we bleed the injectors the engine stumbles then recovers as we close each one.

The only way I noticed it was cranking over with the pipes off and saw smoke/mist from one of the injectors. It had taken me all day to find it.

The second one I went straight to when they told me the symptoms.

thanks majorman, I'll let you know what happens, the pump is out at a shop being bench tested it might be a while before we get it back together now, So how do I check this, Do I disconnect the fuel lines at the injectors one at a time and look for back pessure
