Smoke and less throttle response

I recently purchased a Fordson Major Diesel (1955). It smoked (white)and i figured it was excess diesel in the cylinders. I had good throttle response untill recently. I was running the tractor when the idle went very high and dark exhust smoke took place of the usual white. I had very little low end throttle response and good high end throttle response. The smoke changed from white to dark to almost black at first. When I started the tractor again there was less response to the throttle and it felt like there was less pressure on the throttle itself. It idles mid to very high even when the throttle is set to low idle. I know a little bit about diesels but less about tractors. I'm not sure where to start? Any ideas?

Good Morning
Took the front cover off the injector pump and the washer for the drive joint for the injector had broken, crushed the lower part of the housing causing the diaphram to be partially open/closed. Guesss that is what was causing it to run bad/excess black smoke and poor throttle response. Any Ideas where a person can pick up that front diaphram cover, washer and it looks like the front part of the 3 piece joint is also broken? Where a bolt goes through to connect that drive joint. I'm going to the JD dealer as they are the only tractor parts store around. ouch could get expensive.
Thanks again for your help and will stay in touch.

Think you mean the coupling that drives the pump. The best place is a breakers or a CaseNewHolland dealer. I don't think JD ever used that type of pump or drive.

Watch out!! You must not turn the engine or pump if you have the two apart as you will get the pump timing 180 degrees out and she won't start.

Thanks for all of your help. I'm sure this won't be the last time I contact you. Any ideas where a person might come up with these parts? I will need the front housing cover(diaphram cover), front coupling and the washer? All of the drive parts go in front of the coupling pad?
Thanks for your help and will let you know how things turn out.

First check your aircleaner for blockage. try removing the hose to the manifold and see what happens. Revs can go very high when you do this so don't give her too much throttle.

White smoke is not excess diesel, that is black smoke. White smoke is possibly head gasket problems or oil smoke (light blue).

Could be your imagination regarding pressure on the throttle lever as this only works a flap in the intake manifold. The fuel pump is controled by vacuum down two pipes to a diaphram in the pump. This can sometimes get a split in it and require replacing. It might be another place to go after the aircleaner.

Checked the intake at the hose/air cleaner. Pulled the hose and very little increase if at all happened. Nothing blocking or restricting the air flow. Still have the dark smoke so am at a loss as to the next step. Guess a repair manual is in order.
Still idles at a mid to high idle. Are the two line the ones that go from the manifold to the injector pump?

OK. Next step.

Yes you are right about the two pipes. Now remove them both from the pump end. Place your finger over both holes in the pump and pul the stop lever.

You should fell suction and the stop lever should hold back until you remove your finger or creep slowly forward. If you do not feel suction or the stop lever drops straight back forward, your problem is governor diaphram.

A workshop manual is a good thing to have but we can tell you the extra bits that are not in the book.

Pulled the two lines and placed my fingers over the holes and pulled the stop. Return spring is very strong, felt lettle or no suction and the lever went right back to the run position. Tried this several times and felt no suction. Heard the flap or rod being moved in the front of the pump but no suction. The diaphram is located in the cone/cover section where the two vacumn line attach? It looks like the cone/cover section is held in place with four bolts. What is the adjustment part at the very front of that cone/cover? Is that an adjustment for the diaphram?

Right, it sounds like you have a split in the diaphram and need to replace it. Not too difficult. The front housing comes off the pump and the diaprham unhooks from the rack.

The adjustment is to control "hunting" which is engine revs going up and down at tickover. Not something to worry about until you get her running properly.
