Major, Super Major Raised PTO questions, Live PTO

I have a gearbox and driveshaft for what I believe is called a "raised PTO", as mentioned in a previous post. My first question is will it fit on the back of a 1961 Super? The gearbox and long shaft came off the back of a 1958 Major that I traded for a 1959 FPM.

If it does not fit, can I adapt it to make it fit a later Super?

Does this gearbox essentially make the tractor have live PTO? So which is the better way to go, two stage clutch or raised pto? This would be good to know for those of you who have two stage clutch problems and access to one of these rare(???) pto drive units.

I'm interested to have a raised pto unit to my Super Major -64, which is equipped with live pto. Is there any raised pto units available? Broken ones will be also noted. Please send an e-mail.

First question, yes it will fit your Super Major. You may need to re-shape the lever. That unit will not suit a New Performance Super, they had a diffrent ratio.

Secondly, raised PTO is not the same as live PTO. Live PTO requires a Two stage clutch.

What raised PTO allows is the hydraulic lift to work with the PTO dis-engaged. This is a must for three point linkage mounted pto implements like a mower or rotery cultivator/power harrow. Your lift will work with the mower dis-engaged.

Fitting is simple. Drain the rear axle. Remove the PTO shaft from the rear of the tractor. Slide in the new PTO shaft and bolt on the raised PTO housing. Refill with oil. Job done. Those units are sought after so go ahead and fit it.

My 62 Super has Live and Raised PTO.

Good luck

Steve

Thanks Steven, I always appreciate your replies.

I took time to read some posts at Oscar's discussion board regarding raised pto. I was confused on which Super Major had a 1:1.33 ratio and which one was 1:1, or whether it would only work on the Minimec pump tractors. Your statement answers that question and I appreciate the information greatly.

It is too bad these gearboxes are not more plentiful in the US. I used the tractor without a two stage clutch or the added raised pto. I bought a broken 1958 a few years back just to get the pto gearbox. Now I can install it on the 1961. There is some mention as to doing the installation on a steep incline, but I want to change all the oils to 15-40 anyway.

Thanks again, Mark1

Steve,

Is the only advantage of the raised PTO is that you can raise and lower the implements without engaging the PTO or are there any other advantages to it ??? I have a 59 FPM and it has a raised PTO also.

Thanks,

Scott

Thats the main reason raised pto's where fitted. The Major was designed during the period when true "Power Farming" started and when the Fordson Major where first released the main job for a tractor was ploughing. There bigest fault was the hydraulic pump was on the wrong side of the pto gearbox.

The raised PTO has one more advantage. The PTO horspower is a lot higher. The standard PTO requires 1200 rpm engine speed for 540rpm pto speed. With the early raised pto the engine speed is 1600rpm, right where the engine makes its maximum torque. The down side to this is that the forward speed is faster, great for disc mowers, not so good for bailers and power harrows. This is the reason the ratios on the New Performance major where revised. All PTOs on the NPSM, raised and standard, are at 1400 engine rpm and the axle ratio gives a slower forward speed. By the early 60s the Major realy needed an 8 speed gear box to make it more usefull.
