Air Cleaner Mesh

Was taking apart my air cleaner today to prep it for paint tomorrow. I noticed that when I turned the upper portion ( not the portion that comes out when you change the oil ) was about seventy five percent plugged up with what looks like grease.

What is the best way to clean the "grease" out of the metal mesh without hurting the air cleaner???

Thanks,

Scott

Boil it out Re: Air Cleaner Mesh in reply to morningwood, 04-27-2006 17:58:43
Use a heavy concetration of laundry detergent in water and boil, as it boils in water all the dirty oil floats to the top of the water and no big mess with petro cleaners. This will take all the loose paint too. Just got done doing my MF 35 and Dexta. But be prepaired to repaint every time. The top wire wool DOES NOT come out.

Just went through the exact same problem on the 9N I am working on. I looked in the archives here and found a suggestion for Chore Boy scrubbing pads. (post said Chore Girl but I could only find Chore Boy)

They look to be a pretty close match. Bought two cases from Amazon or some such place and they look real good.

Come in Brass or Stainless.

Hope this helps

I dont know if it is recommended, but I submerged my upper filter in a large pan of clean kerosene, to dissolve the grease/sludge. Then I would take it out and blow the gunk out with an air nozzle, and return the filter back into the kerosene, and repeat a few times, eventually I had a clean, silver mesh again. I then blew it out with air really well and let it set overnight to dry it out. The next day it was dry, and sparkly clean. My tractor runs great with it. Worked for me!

Everyone,

Thanks for the advise, the air cleaner is currently soaking in a two gallon bucket full of kerosene. I ran the kero through the filter and it seems to have disloged alot of stuff but it didn't disolve all of the grease so that is the reason for the additional soaking.

Thanks,

Scott
