I just bought my first tractor. A 1954 Fordson major diesel. The oil on the dipstick on the left side of the transmission is low as well as having moisture in it. I would like to change the oil before I use the tractor. Where is the drain plug? Filter? Is there only one oil resevoir for the transmission, rear axle and 3pt hydraulics? I see a filler cap right in front of the dip stick that has full and add marked on it, also a filler cap behind the seat above the lift for the 3 pt.

Can anyone tell me how many horse power this tractor is?

Thanks
Don

Don:

If you are looking for oil filter and diesel filter elements, NAPA has a book that list the part numbers and also stocks them.

Otherwise there are lots on ebay

I just washed my oil filter screen in varsol and then blew it dry with the compressor.

Don,

Kenneth is right. 30W engine oil is OK throughout. Fords changed the spec in 1959 so its either or. Gearbox has the level marked on the filler near the clutch, drain underneath on the PTO housing. Rear axle/hydraulics, filler at rear, drain under the drawbar, filter as well, be prepared to get oily. Level is on the dipstick near the gearshift.

Have fun!!!!

Thanks for the info.
Any idea how many gallons of oil I'll need to change all? Also I haven't found a filter yet locally do you know of a source?

Thanks,
Don

You'll want about 15 british gallons for gearbox and hydraulics.

The filter is just a screen that is washable in a suitable parts cleaning fluid.

oops:

We need Majorman here.

I know that the later FM"s take 30 weight oil throughout, but the eaarlier ones still used 90 weight.

I use 20-w-40 diesel engine oil in my engine and straight 30 weight in the diff and gearbox.

I think they are about 54 hp. Just a guess

I got my manual off the internet just do a search and there will be sites.

The filler for the diff is the plug you noticed at the back of the seat..

Check out the fordson free web website there is lots of info on there.

Hi Don:

There are two seperate compartments.

Filler for the gearbox is next to the pto Engagement lever on the left of the tractor standing at the back of the tractor facing forward. Drain plug is under the gearbox. Fill to mark on the filler cap. Does take quite a bit of oil.

Drain for the rear is under the diff, I would advise taking off the oil filter strainer underneath, and washing it out. You will need a new gasket. Only four bolts hold the plate. Do not touch the other bolts on the outside. Dip stick is right next to the gear lever.

I would strongly recommend that you get a manual so you know exactly what you are doing.

I used 30 oil throughout my tractor (1963 FSM) and have had no problems. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Hope this helps.

Kenneth

Is that regular 30 weight engine oil in the engine, transmission and rear axle?

Where can I get a new manual? I do have one but it's pretty tattered. The manual I have says to use 80 or 90 gear lube in the rear axle and final drive, but I have seen a few different posts that suggested 30.

Thanks for your help,
Don
