I have an "F" with no serial no. on the block. It has been suggested that the block may be a replacement. When taking the differential apart I found the number 6.5.22 cast into the side of the bronze worm gear. Today I started to tighten up the steering gear and noticed on the front face of the dash the number 7 17 22 and on the rear surface facing the driver, the last patent date is NOV 1 1921. I would be interested if anyone knows if these might indicate the year of manufacture. Thanks. FL

The date on the dash is a casting date, as is the one you found on the worm gear. You can assume that this tractor was most likely assembled within a week after the highest date you can find. The pattent dates don"t mean all that much in terms of dating the tractor. Some other features your 1922 should have is a single hole Henry Ford & Son tank, a Holley 280 manifold and vaporizor, and it should not have a transmission brake. Also a good way to tell a factory replacement motor is if the oil pan rail on the Block is tapped (original model F engines used a bolt and nut to hold on the oil pan) Also you may find an "X" cast into the block on the side opposite the manifold about right behind the coil box. For referance of what your serial number could be, 1922 was from 201026 to 268583. I have a 1922 with a dash cast date in April "22 with s/n 215293, my grandfather has a 1922 with a May "22 dash cast date and s/n 228917, and my brother also has a 1922 with a July "22 dash cast date and a s/n of 247608. Yours would be close to this with the July 17 1922 dash date. Just as a final note, starting in 1923 casting dates on fordson parts are very rare, and you have to rely on features to date a tractor with a replacement engine. Hope this helps!-Steve

Steve, Thanks for all the info! The tank is a Fordson, made by, Fordmotor Company, Detroit, Mich., U.S.A.; two hole w/back hole feeding an internal 1 gal.?? round tank. Embossed over this rear internal tank are the words "Gasoline for starting only". The manifold is installed w/ exhaust up and a Zenith-2 updraft carb(casting no. B85 and inside casting Id. "Holley 17") mounted on the bottom. The manifold has letters cast on it that appears to say "something?? Tractor" and more. Will get a picture and include.(For another day). There are "brake discs" on the tranny idler gear. The oil pan rail on the block is drilled, but not tapped. There is no X or letter on the block opp. the manifold, just 3 small bosses that appear to be used as support wires or rods to hold the coring in place during the casting process. It would appear that this machine has had many modifications to keep it going over the years. I guess right now I'm thinking this "F" may have been assembled in early 1923 with parts cast in mid-late 1922. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have, and thanks again Steve.

I think you are correct in thinking this tractor was pieced together over the years to keep it going (many were this way). The "2 hole" detroit gas tank was used from 1925 thru the end of "F" model production. (With maybe a few on some early Irish N models) If the pan rail is not tapped on the block, it is 1928 or older. It still may be a replacement, but would have had to be replaced before 1928. Another possibility could be the # is rusted away, or the manifold mating surface was machined down and removed the serial number. To narrow down the Block mfg. date first look at the manifold ports. If the top of the manifold is flush with the head surface it is early 1927 or earlier. If the manifold is about a fingers width below the head surface it is a 1927 or 1928. This 27-28 style also has the valve guides installed from the bottom, where the older ones come in from the top. Also look at the oil fill, if it is the flipper style and has a set screw in the block coming in from the front, it is at least a 1923. 1922 and older have a removeable "mushroom" filler cap and no set screw. The up draft manifold may be an aftermarket one, or just an original flipped, but I do not think any originals had the word "tractor" on them. I think the trans brake was first used in 1923, but a few may have been used in the end of 22. If you want to send some pictures I can help you out some more. My family has over 20 fordsons, an we have done alot of research on dating fordsons, so should be able to give you some help. -Steve

Hi Steve, It sure is getting interesting: 2 hole tank-'25 or after; pan rail not tapped-'28 or B4; manifold flush w/head-'27 or B4; valve guides from top-'27 or B4; fliper oil fill & trans-brake-'23 or after.. Looking like it may be between '25 and '27. I don't have photo equipment yet to add more discription, that will have to come later. I took block and related parts to engine shop today and learned a lot. Looks like boring, installing new valves, guides, seats???,grinding c'shaft and maybe pouring new mains. Won't bore you guys who have been thru it B4, but I'm excited about getting going. Back in '43 I was in short pants when my father and grandmother auctioned off the family farm and the 19?? Model F. This has been like opening a page of history. Many thanks to all who shared info and their experiences. FL
