First off let me say I know very little about Fordson Dexta Tractors, I am merely a mechanic who has been hired to ready one for sale buy the owners widow. Now the tractor I am working on is a 3 cyl. diesel probably of around 1959 vintage. How close is this tractor related to the later model Fords? Where were these made? Are new parts still avaliable? Would this probably be a 6 or 12 volt system? This thing is not a slick tractor it has worked hard most of its life, but all the major things on it work well and the engine runs very well, what is the worth of this tractor? Also what is the little hand pump thing on the bottom left side of the fuel tank? Thanks for the help, Greg.

The engine is based on the Perkins P3 or 3 144, it has a cylinder block cast by Ford and was machined by Perkins. The engine was also called the F3. The cylinder head will probably have Perkins 3 144 cast onto it inside the rocker cover. Unlike the P3 this engine had a gear train in the timing case - similar to later Perkins engines.
If it is a Super Dexta it will have the bored out 3 cylinder Perkins 3 152 engine which is the same engine as fitted to MF 3 cylinder tractors. The main difference is that Ford prefered the Simms Inline injector pump wheras MF prefered the CAV DPA rotary pump

New parts should be available from most good vintage tractor parts suppliers.

Sorry Phillip I am going to disagree unless you mean the tractor that was badged 2000 and was really a Dexta. The Dexta has a different engine to the 2000. The engine in a Dexta was the result of a Ford/Perkins colaboration whilst the one in the 2000 was a US designed "square" 3 cylinder.

Otherwise I agree with you that the Dexta is an excellent little tractor. They are not really related to the later Fords as they are British designed. Parts are still available. Engines bear a simularity to the three cylinder Perkins engines used in the MF tractor range but not all parts are the same. Dexta's have a different injection pump and injectors. Transmissions and hydraulics are very good but you may find that it is easy to select two gears at once. This is due to wear on the bottom of the gear stick and this can be simply built up with weld. Hydraulics are similar to the earlier Earlier Ford range, the 2000 range had a different ram cylinder and linkage. These can be interchanged but the results are not always good because of the slight differences.

The electrical system is 12 volts and normally + earth from new. If an alternator has been fitted the system will be changed to a - earth.

Hope this helps.

They were make in England. The Dexta is very much like the Ford 2000. You can get most parts form a Ford/New Holland dealer. The little pump is the primer button for the preheater. My 61 Dexta is 12v positive ground. You can get all the information you need at: Link
