Checked out the major diesel today and as cdmn had suspected there are some mechanical issues such as the injector pump needs rebuilding and a sliding shaft in trans causes two gears to come together making motor kill if not really carefull when operating. But, body, loader and hyd. great shape and no apparent leaks. I'd like to throw an offer at them well knowing repairs at this point already $1000.00 plus because it seems one way or another you pay, wether to fix it or up front if its a good runner. I appreciate and respect any thoughts from this site and your patience as I learn. If not this one, I going to keep looking. Thanks!

The problems you noted are not really big ones. I do not know why you say the pump needs rebuilding unless it has been filled with water. The problem with the gearbox could possibly be cured by a small simple welding job.

Cdmn was really negative in the comments about the Major and diesels. These tractors are built like a tank and have to be really badly abused to not be worth repairing. I think it is because the experience of these diesels in your part of the world is limited. You have had more experience of petrol motors but we in Europe have been using and developing diesels to cope with our conditions and starting problems with the type of diesel in the Major are few even after 50 years.

Also the workings of the tractor are simple to understand and simple to repair. They were easily repaired in farm workshops and even in the field. I have repaired both engines and gearboxes in diggers, dump trucks and loading shovels all based on the Major, on site.

Your main problem with one of these tractors would be spare parts although most are still available both new and second hand. They need finding though.

Good luck in your hunt for a tractor. I find them a great form of fun and relaxation. And I use them to run my small acreage so I am not talking about ones used for "ornaments".
