gen or alternator? working super major?

I guess I am going to bite the bulet, I {well my 14 yr old son} have a super major 500 diesel, It has a 12 volt battery in there now, has for the last 2 years, been just recharging it every once in a while to keep it going, I see from my book that it is supposed to have 2 6volts in series , there is space for 2 batteries, they even had 2 12 volts hooked up when I first bought it, my question I guess is should I try to get the generator and VR going , or put a 12 volt alternator in there and be able to run lights and a winch for the wood lot on her? I think the gen is not putting anything out , I checked it a while ago, but I am thinking of getting this one in the barn next to do some tinkering, thanks pat,
PS.this is a tractor in upstate ny US.

If it has a gen.. why not see if it works. If it is the lucas products like the later thousand series use, or similar, it will be a B-Circuit design. The 25$ or so dollar regulator is not very robust. I have a 5000 that I had to dink with the vr to make it work.

You jumper bat to field to polarize the b-circuit jobs. Then start.. check voltage between armature and ground .. preferable with an analog meter.. the cheap digital ones don't like the brush noise. You are looking for higher than battery voltage from when you started it. Get engine above idle.. for instance.. onmy 5000 I like to have it at 1000 rpm for good charge... then if it is not charging, full field it by jumpering bat to field.. that should make max charge. If you have charge at armature, but not shown at battery, the cutout is stuck.. get a new vr. Preferably the 20a current limited lucas vr.. however a 25a current limited 12v vr for some of the ford thousand series will work just fine.. except thaey will let the genny overcharge past it's sustained capability.

thanks soundguy, I will give that a try, the second test you say full field jumper it, do you mean leave the jumper on those term while testing? or just brush them again as in polorizing? thanks pat

Try polarizing first.. if it doesn't charge, then jumper and leave that way for a short duration so you can get the meter probs on there looking for voltage at the armature, then battery.

thanks , I will try that, this is the next tractor in the barn, first I gotta get my 9n out now, should be a quick fix, need to put a new gauge in, maybe a cut out relay, but at least thie 9n I know motors around tried that tonite,
