Fellows, I need some help trying to locate pictures of the screw type drive system which was used on Fordsons, and I believe some of the N-models, for movement over snow. If anything, the correct name for this drive system would be a big help.

Thanks

Wow those are great. Thanks for posting them. What I am using them for is that on another discussion forum I am on involving military vehicles, a company has "reinvented" this system of off-terrain mobility. Lots of argument as to whether it is feasable or not. I jumped right in and showed them that it has been done successfully. Thanks for all input given!

I think it might be exaggerating to say they were successful. I'll bet they do nothing but slip on hard ice, and in soft snow they probably dig straight down if the load is hard to pull. Might work well in a narrow range of conditions.
This is besides the point that the Fordson would have been a bear to get started outside in the cold.

I think this picture is what you're after. This is a 1923 Fordson Snow-Motors Conversion

I found this picture on the tractorbynet.com site. The web address is Link in case the link option doesn't work

Actually after searching on Yahoo for "snow motors" tractor, I also turned up a link to an archived Time magazine article dated Jan. 4, 1926. The link is>Link

If>Link you're interested it costs $1.99 to get the complete article but it starts with this:

"Having used the motor car for almost every other conceivable purpose, leading Detroit automobile makers have now organized a company entitled "Snow Motors Inc.," to put out a machine which will negotiate the deepest snowdrifts at six to eight miles an hour. The new car will consist of a Ford tractor power-plant mounted on two revolving cylinders instead of wheels"

The only info I have on it is one page in 'Ford Farm Tractors' by Randy Leffingwell (MBI Publishing Co.) It's a conversion kit made by Snow-Motors, Inc., of Detroit MI. The front wheels and entire rear axle assembly were replaced by components of the kit.
