I rebuilt my '26 F 8 or so yrs ago.I mixed and matched to get a good engine assembly, which I had re-sleeved to std bore. I turned oversize pistons down to standard and fitted oversize wrist pins. I had rod-wristpin clearances@~.0005". During break-in I siezed #2 wrist pin...(in retrospec, I think I was over-revving) I talked to Dan Zilm (God rest his Sole) who said the wrist pins should be loosened up to .003" for adequate lube, which I did. I reassembled and have run the thing for maybe 150 hrs over the past 8 yrs. It has always made a loud knocking (sounds like wrist pin knock) when running w/ enough spark advance to develop max power. Otherwise the thing ran great. It sarted to consume a lot of oil recently so I decided to pull the pistons to check it out and to install bronze bushings in the rods to tighten up the clearance to<.001". As I pulled pistons out I found 3 out of 4 had broken oil scraper rings. Anyone have any advise on what has been going on, or what to do from here?

You may have the same problem I had with mine. When the block was sleeved they probably left a small step at the bottom of the cylinder for the sleeve to sit on. The oil ring is low enough on the piston that it can catch on the bottom of the sleeve. I found this out when I assembled mine, luckily before any damage was done. I was able to use a die grinder and sanding drum to blend the bottom of the sleeve and the cylinder to keep the ring from catching.

I will definitely check to see if there is a lip where the ring is catching, although I sort of doubt it because I have run it for so long. How about the top end rattle. Do you think it is wrist pins?
