Simply not enough hard work.

This will be a common problem with all underworked diesel engines. To get the best from them they need to be either hard at work or stopped.

The cure would be a couple of days on the plough working at about 1600 rpm.

Thanks, That I can fix. I have about 2 or three more months untill I need to disc and I will be putting in some long hours then. I will be pulling a pretty decent size disc and she should warm up pretty good.
Just for my own knowledge, what is the condition that causes this?

Softening and washing away of the carbon seal around the top of the piston.

If you strip a diesel that has been on light loads, the carbon is so soft it will wipe off. A hard working engine will have carbon so hard you will have to scrape it off.
