I have a 1954 Fordson Major Diesel that spun the no.3 bearing. I was able to find a 52 reuilt and barreled the two engines to make one. And have the rest of the 52 for parts. My problem is that it seems to be smoking excessively, now that it's together, more than it did before. I had a mechanic look at it and he tried to time it but there is no timing mark pointer on the front by the crankshaft pulley. It seems to be running better but seems to still be running rich. Can anyone help. Also what horsepower is this tractor. I cant find any definite answers.

Unless you have a wide fan belt model, your timing marks will be on the flywheel, viewed through a hole under the right hand side channel. (viewed from the seat). Colour of the smoke could be important. Is it black, blue or grey? black means too much fuel- too little air so check your air cleaner or too far advanced, Blue means oil burning- qute possible if yu have a rebuilt engine that has done no work and therefore has no carbon seal built up. Grey means unburnt fuel, normally seen when trying to start unsuccesfully or timing retarded.

These are just general comments rather than absolute facts.

Your tractor tested 38.5 hp,belt or pto and 34+ at the drawbar.
