Cooling system problem on 1963FSM

I recently drained and refilled my rad and block with new coolant.

I was pushing snow for about 1 hour the other night. Tarctor was not working very hard.

When I arrived in the garage to park it, all of a sudden there was a gush of coolant from the overflow hose on the rad (about a liter).

Does anyone have any idea why it would do this.

I am not sure what poundage the Rad cap is supposed to be. The existing one has no number on it. Could it be I am pressurinzing the system too much and need a new cap. Or do I have a major problem.

Can someone tell me the right cap for the tractor

The rad did have a very small leak. I just took the rad out to repair. There was lots of coolant still left in the tractor when I drained it to remove the rad.

Also took the thermostat out. It was partially open when I took it out. Tarctor was cold.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kenneth

A faulty cap could be the cause of your problem. So could over filling the radiator. If the tractor did not overheat, the water is not blowing out of the overflow all the time and the level is at the bottom of the filler neck, I would think that you do not have a problem.

If the water is being constantly blown out of the overflow even straight after starting, you have a head gasket failure.

Hi Majorman:

Well I think my problem is solved.

I patched the little leak in the Rad. Refilled the system with new antifrezze again. I may have not had the right mix in it so I made sure I did a 50/50 mix this time.

I also installed an overflow bottle to catch any overflow.

Used the tractor today for about 1.5 hours clearing snow. There was a tiny bit of coolant in the overflow bottle, but otherwise everything seems to be working fine.

One funny thing is that I put a water temp gauge on the tractor, the capillary type, and it is not moving.

Does this mean My thermostat is opening too soon and the Engine is not reaching operating temp.

I put the old thermostat back in, and it was partially open when cold. So I suspect it is not working.

I will eventually order one from the UK.

Thanks alot again for the advice

Kenneth

Ken
I had a cold running Major until I took off the engine fan and put an electric one from a Mustang in front of the rad. I used a temp sensor from a local hotrod shop that fits in the rad hose to sense the engine temp for the fan operation. I draw the air through the rad and blow it forward. Lots of heat in the cab now for the snow blowing operation. Bill
