FMD doesn't run well when cold

I finally got my FMD 1955 started last weekend after 4 years. It didn"t run very well. It hunted quite a lot. Here is a sound file that was recorded just after starting the engine. After the engine warmed up it ran fine. I suppose the problem is in the vacuum governor. I know that the diaphragm isn"t broken. I tested it before I reassembled the vacuum pipes by pulling the stop lever out and putting my fingers in the vacuum pipe holes. The lever stayed where it was until I took my fingers off the holes. I cannot get to the tractor until next weekend and I haven"t tried to adjust it yet.

Will this problem be fixed just by adjusting the dampening valve (which way to turn?) or could there be something else that is wrong?

I do not run well when cold either.

Stop worrying, that is perfectly normal for a Major at low revs. If it ran like that flat out you would have a problem. Just use and enjoy.

PS. Sound file idea is a great aid for diagnosis!

Is the hunting supposed to be really that bad? I was just told by a Major owner that his tractor runs much better when cold. Would it help at all if I adjusted the dampening valve? It ran a bit better 4 years ago when we tried it if I remember correctly. I just remembered that after the first starting I cleaned the filter that is on top of the governor because the manual said so. I don't know if it had ever been cleaned before. Is it possible that this has affected so much? If I understand anything about how the governor works a dirty filter could have a dampening effect on its own by restricting the flow of air in the other side of the diaphraghm.

According to your sound file the tractor was running at really low revs. At those revs any Major will sound like that. A diesel should not be run at those revs for long, it should either be in work or stopped.

If you set the tick over up a couple of hundred revs the hunting should disappear. Hunting is only a problem if it occurs at about 1200 revs upward.

No two Majors run the same and I have experience of hundreds from my time in the dealership. You could try adjusting the damper but this might lead to other problems.

IMHO.
