Ok, I contacted the closest Ford tractor dealer that is still in business (Has a bunch of old Fords and a few Fordson. Even had a County a year a go!). I asked their advise on the rear end fluid, and they say that according to Ford spec 4/94, the Fordson major should have spec 134 hydraulic fluid in the rear. The service manager went on to explain that 134 is actually 10W-30 motor oil with a few additives. That is the stuff I am going with. Not that I doubted Majorman, but I just couldn't bring myself to put straight motor oil in the hydraulics (although that is basically what I will be doing now anyway if 134 is in essense just motor oil). Thanks Majorman, you were right on the money again. Just let us Yanks complicate something (calling it 134 instead of 10w-30) and we will be sure to do it.

All the information I give comes direct from the genuine Fordson workshop manual and the service notes I collected during my years working in one of the largest Ford dealers here in England. I realise that some information given in these books would be modified in certain conditions but it should be a good basis.

The 134 you quote is a modern oil for modern tractors and although an engine oil, it contains additives that are not required in the rear axle of a Major and can cause engine problems if used in the older engines. Because we do not work the old engines, the brake lubrication additives in 134 can plate the cylinder bores and cause glazing. That is why I recommend using a straight oil in both engine and rear transmission of the Major, as do Ford.

I have seen large numbers of engine problems over my career caused by light use and oils with brake additives in. Both Perkins and Mercedes engines have had warranty issues in the past if these oils were used in their engines.

I am not saying that 134 is a bad oil, just that I would be carefull if you use it in a Major engine that is not being worked hard.

Majorman,
I will only be using the 134 in the rear. The engine is getting straight 30w. Thanks for the info about problems if the Major is not worked hard. The hardest the old girl works is once a week running the manure spreader, which is to say that she doesn't get worked very hard.

Thanks again,
matt
