From data I can discern, the Mark I, II, and III engines were as follows:

Serial Number 1217101 to 1425096 (Mark I Engine)

Serial Number 1425097 to 1591023 (Mark II Engines)

Serial Number 1591024 and up.... (Mark III Engine)

Brian... can you substantiate this information? Please be advised that I am not absolutely sure about these numbers coinciding with the Mark series changes in the Dagenham 220 cid engine.

Please help me!

I am looking at a 1963 Ford Step Van to restore. It has a Dagenham 220 engine. Can you help me with any information about this engine? For example, are parts still available? How durable is the engine?

Eric

Don,
Certainly in the service letters of January 1963, the numbers you have are correct. In November 1961 the engine numbers were changed to 08A etc. 08A lasted till January 1962 when 08B started then through yearly till the last "grey wheeled" Supers 08D. The months built were added to the end of the engine number, A= January etc.

However changes took place in 1954 and we in the dealership always refered to this as the Mk2 engine. The fan belt was changed to a smaller cross section, the timeing marker was moved from the front and marked on the flywheel, the injection pump was changed and inclined, the timeing was changed, a breather was fitted. Certain internal mods were done to the crankshaft and piston pins.Tapered commpression rings were introduced and rotator caps fitted to the exhaust valves. Engine No. position was changed to the front of the block, the oil filters were changed from Fram to Tecalamit or AC. Later diesels for industrial use were allowed to rev higher to give 44hp at 1800rpm and were fitted with a new manifold which was not fitted to agricultural tractors until 1957.

Mods like these were also incorporated in the MK2 engine of 1957 along with the removal of the throttle from engine block at the front, to an external linkage at the rear.

The industrial engines were fitted with a mechanical governor some time before the agricultural engines and I am still trying to locate the details of these. I found all the details of the 2400 series easily but think that my other books are stored in the roof space.

Did you get the Nuffield picture?
regards

Brian
