Is the hydraulic and transmisson oil all in oneż
Is the rear axle fluid supposed to be full up to the filler plug behind the seat? Is it gear oil or hydraulic fluid???? Thanks a lot

The oil for the rear axle and hydraulics are the same. The gear box is seperate. Rear axle oil is 30W or Multigrade, normal engine oil. If you have an old Major it may have 80/90W but this can be changed to the 30W as Fords changed the specs. in the late 1950's.

There is a dipstick for the level to the front/left of the main gear lever. The gearbox level is cast into the housing near the filler plug near the clutch linkage.

When I brought my newly acquired '54 Major to the tractor shed last October, I drained the hydraulic fluid out due to the milky colour - the machine might have been stored outside for some time. It's been months since I've been out there, but it seemed like 15 gallons came out. Does anyone know how much it takes to refill? I was recently told by a heavy equipment mechanic that transmission fluid would be a good choice to use instead of hydraulic oil, because it has anti-foaming properties, is tolerant of different temperatures, is less expensive than hydraulic oil, and the detergent additive will help clean out any internal gunk when I eventually drain the ATF. Any comments on this? Many thanks from the rookie.

You must not use either hydraulic oil or ATF in your Major. The original oil was 90W gear oil but this was superceded by 30W engine oil in about 1959.

Any engine oil will be OK if it is in the range 20/40W. I use Castrol Multiuse in mine. The oil you put in the engine is the best so you do not have to have an assortment of oils in stock.

Rear axle holds about 9 gallons (English).

90 weight gear oil, and only 9 gallons? Was mine overfilled then, because I had two 5 gallon pails full, plus an assortment of smaller containers to catch the rest. I'm still very new to tractors in general, but not using hyd oil sounds funny. When I go to the city on Thursday I guess I'll take a look around for gear oil. How often does gear oil need to be changed when compared to hyd oil?
thanks again

Jason you have to remember that the oil in the rear axle has to lubricate the dif, crown wheel and all the bearings and gears associated with driving the tractor. Hydraulic oil is not a good lubricant. I would still stick with the 30W, after all if that is what Ford recommend ----. (Just my 2c)

Crown wheel? Is that the ring gear? Sorry Majorman, I just had to ask.

Mark,
Ring gear is what goes round the flywheel for the starter to engage in. Crown wheel and pinion are what takes the drive to the final drives from the gearbox. Oh for a common language!! :0) Take care!

Where is the level check for the rear axle, on the Fordson Major Diesel, or do I just put in 9 gallons, and leave it at that?

Also, do I use the same 30W oil in both, the gearbox, and the rear axle, or is the 30W oil just for the rear axle, and something else goes in the gearbox(if so, what)?
