Steve, You have a June 1954 Fordson Major Diesel. A least that is when the engine was built and normaly the engine number coincides with a little plate on the front of the firewall. If it does not, then another engine has been installed. The pre cleaner on the air filter should be under the bonnet although it is also possible that it might be through the bonnet at that build. The engine is 40.5 brake HP measured at the flywheel at 1600 rpm and gives 140 lbs/ft of torque at 1150 rpm. The weak areas are the brakes which need lots of looking after to keep them up to scratch and for goodness sake don't use the handbrake to slow down or bring the tractor to a halt if you have one fitted. This works on the back of the gearbox and the plates can seize and break the retaining pins out of the gearbox housing. Not a bad job but getting bits can be a bit of a bind. The engine should start easily in all weathers without any starting fluid. If you start using ether to start her you will be looking at an engine rebuild not too far down the line. In cold weather there is a little button on the fuel pump to either push in or pull out to aid cold start. Good luck and have fun.
