Diesel in Dexta sump

I have a 58 Dexta that has started to blow some whitish smoke and spit out unburnt fuel or oil from the exhaust. This appears to be happening at all operating speeds. This coincided with a throttle that began speeding up by itself (which I tracked down to a split governing diaphragm and fixed).

Initially I was worried that I might have been burning oil, but a check of the sump showed it to be over-full (full length of dipstick), and the oil smelt of diesel fuel. I drained the sump and replaced the oil to the correct level, but 2 weeks later the sump is full of diesel again.

The tractor seems to be running fine (power wise), and I'm guessing that the excessive smoke is from the thinned out engine oil getting past the rings and into the combustion chamber.

I have looked at the engine schematics, but can't see any obvious place that so much fuel could be leaking into the engine oil.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Peter

Peter,
Your leak will be through the front seal of the injection pump.

Thanks Majorman.

I'll check it out. Do you happen to know if the seal can be replaced easily (i.e with the pump still in place on the tractor)?

Regards,
Peter

Peter,

The pump will have to come off. Its the sort of job I would take to a diesel shop.

Ah, that's a pity. I was hoping that I could remove the pump timing gear via the adjustment inspection plate and then 'hook' the old seal out.

Oh well, looks like a harder job than I had hoped for.

Thanks for your help.

Peter
