How many hours would a fordson major diesel engine do before having to be overhauled also which do you think is the best engine the major diesel or the ford 4000 5000 type engine.

Heres my 2 bobs worth.

The 4000 / 5000 engines advantage is its fully stressed, none of those side rails. The Fordson engines advantage is its long stroke that gives more touque. The 5000s over square design is more suited to a car. Ford advertised the short stoke advantage of slow piston speed hence longer lasting. I have a Super Major and a 5000. The 5000 is a gutless wonder. (I have had 4 Ford 5000s, 2 Super Majors and a Power Major). Torque is what pulls the load, hp is the rate it works at.

Hours before a rebuild depends on how well its maintained and what type of work. 6000hrs is not out of the question for a well looked after machine.

The Super Major with live drive and raised PTO is still my favorite. The down side of these old tractors is the lack of gears (Needs 8 speed)

Think my friend Steven has answered the question perfectly. When the "X" series came out we were told 9000 hours should be the target but, depending on the oils used and the work being done, some did not make it to 2000. But the same could be said for the Super and the Dexta.

If the engines of all the models are worked hard from new and the correct oils used and changed they will last many thousands of hours. But if subject to light use and stop/start work the hours will drop and the engines will start to suffer. My old contempories always used to say that a diesel should be hard at work or stopped and over the years I have noted this to be true.

I have only one small point to take up with Steven. He has not got my favorite tractor of the "X" or "Y" series in his collection! A 4000, 4600 or better still a 4610 4WD. That is a tractor where the over square engine really works and has a massive amount of torque! ;0)
