I am restoring a E27N. The engine starts but will not run for any length of time. Is this likely to be a carb or a govenor problem

I had similar problem with my E27N , the problem was the small passages in the float bowl being blocked , a good clean was the cure.

Hi Tim

I had the same problem with my e27n,in addition to the first reply.I would check the fuel tanks for rust and other debris.
My petrol tank was quite rusty, and the particles kept blocking up the fuel lines and the carb.
Even though I flushed the tank and blew the lines through with an air-line it keeps coming back!
I used a 'kit' from the company called frost.
It contains a flushing agent to get rid of the deposits, an etching agent and a special paint to coat the inside of the tank. Following the instructions to the letter,I have not had any problems with fuel starvation.
I also used it on my tef fergie and it solved that problem too.

Good luck.

Mark uk.

Thank you for the replies.I will check the carb and fuel supply.Additional to my first email I should have stated that whilst the engine is running ( a couple of mins.sometimes longer ) it is difficult to regu;ate the speed. It is inclined to over rev bafore conking out.

I think this points in the same direction, Tim. If the fuel flow is restricted (by rust, gum, or other foreign matter), engine speed will be difficult to control; the governor is going to open up to allow more fuel to flow so that engine speed will increase to the speed at which the governor is set. That would account for the high rev's. Once the fuel flow becomes insufficient to keep the engine running, it will (of course) stall.

I also believe that Mark-UK is right on target when he recommends a tank cleaner/sealer kit. (Especially the sealer aspect of it; once you have cleaned the tank, the sealer will prevent new rust from forming.) One of the other forums on this site featured the following posting a few months back:

"I soaked my gas tank with 3 gallons of vinegar, then flushed it, then two gallons of muriatic acid plus equal water, flushed that as per instructions. (I could not swab the tank, as it has baffles...) I now have a new tank shiny-nickel clean! A lot easier than taking off and putting back plus cleaning..."

The E27N fuel tank is small enough and easy enough to access that you may want to remove it to ensure thorough cleaning.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

Tim: It's rather difficult (if not impossible) to diagnose the problem without a lot of additional information.

The fact that your engine will start but not stay running makes me think you may have a fuel system problem. Have you inspected the carburetor? Often when an engine sits idle for many years, the gasoline in the fuel tank/fuel lines/carburetor gradually evaporates, leaving a gummy, varnish-like residue behind, which can easily clog narrow passages and carburetor needles/jets. You may want to consider removing the carburetor and giving it a complete going-over to make sure that it is clean and functional.
