Posted a similar message on the Ford Page and thought I'd try here as well.
We're looking at a 5600 Ford with the County type of front wheel assist. I'm wondering if County is still in business, how are parts availability and more-so, how reliable are these units ? This system has been around a long time so I would think it would be o.k., but technology has progressed in the meantime.

There is an outfit in western canada that buys and salvages these tractors. Something like Britshtractors.com? I bought parts for mine there. A lot of those type tractors were sold up there and in Pa. in the U.S.. It's considered and industrial tractor so engine gasket sets and parts are available through industrial engine suppliers.

Thankyou goldenoaks - I'll try their site. This tractor has only 2375 hrs on it , but I want to be sure of parts availability as we keep tractors a very long time.

Where abouts are you located? I know a guy that has 2 of them. I think that one is in pretty good shape, county4? no cab. The other, he has a new engine (86 hrs) thats he has lined up for it, with cab, county6, I think. Shoot me an email, I can get you more info. Hound

Thanks Hound , I'm located in Southern Ontario, south of Hamilton , near Lake Erie. On further investigation, I've found the this 5600 has a ZF FWA , not a County and that ZF is still in business. This 5600 has only 2275 hrs. on the clock and was used only in a vineyard (no loader work). Very tempting @ $13000. Thanks for your help.

Thankyou Hound ! I must say that I'm enjoying tracking down information on this axle almost as much as purchasing the tractor. I guess it's a sign of getting older (maybe wiser?) by investigating these tractor deals further before purchase. I just never realized the number of companies involved in producing these fwa systems.

County went out of business in 1983, there are some parts available.

Thankyou Roger. What do you think of their longevity and reliability ? I tend to keep tractors for a long time , so would want to feel comfortable if I bought this tractor.

Are you sure what you are looking is a "County" conversion? I ask this because I dont recall a Ford 5600 being listed,6600 and 7600 were "County" conversions and just to confuse you even more Ford supplied 5600,6600,6700,7600,and 7700 from about 1978 with the ZF axel and then later on the smaller 3600,4100 and 4600 with the "Carraro axel.can you determine the axel manufacturer?

Bingo Roger - Bet it's a ZF axle ! Tractor is 50 miles away but I took down this info from the fw assembly -- ZP5P , 4468456018h and 10780. Can you fill me in on this manufacturer ,are they still in business , parts availability etc ? Funny , I just assumed it was a County as I had only seen that type of drive on Counties. I learn something every day on this site --who says you're never too old to learn something ?

ZF is still out there bigtime, they made the front assist for the European John Deere and others, maybe still do,I am sorry I cant de-code those numbers but would suggest that a friendly partsman at your New-Holland dealer could help.

Much appreciated Roger !! Where are you located and do you know how I could get in touch with ZF (web site , mailing address etc.) This 5600 has only 2275 hrs on the clock and was used in a vineyard (no loader work). Basically turned in for tax purposes only. Front axle is driven along the left side rather than down the middle of the tractor. NH dealer has a few parts listed, but not all are priced out (he feels that those not priced are no longer available)
Once again , thankyou for your information as we are new to FWA.
