Super Major Injector Pump Lubrication

I know we've beaten this subject to death, but I still don't have clarity on it. My Major has the Simms injector, and, like all of yours, it is noisy. But is it too noisy?

I've read here that some of the pumps have a tapped hole with plug somewhere in the middle of the "side wall" of the injector. And that this is for putting oil in the pump. Well, I have a tapped hole with plug, but it's near the top of the injector, just below where the four lines attach that go to the cylinders. Are we talking about the same device located a bit higher on the injector wall?

If I loosen this plug in an attempt to learn something, what am I trying to learn? How would I check the level of lubrication inside the pump? What if I don't find anything inside? Do I add oil? How much? To what level? What kind of oil? And is there an o-ring or washer that I might ruin in loosening the plug? You all make it sound so easy, but I've got a good-running Super Major that I'd like to keep that way.

Mark, I really need you to make a trip down this way, 'cause this is only one question I have. :-)

Put oil in the Simms Injection pump. Use 15w40 , same as you put in the engine. THERE IS A BASE CAMSHAFT & lifter plungers that require lubrication.To get the correct amount of oil in the base,simply remove the banjo bolt securing the steel tube , pigtail atmospheric breather, located at the front, lower corner of the base of the injection pump. Now add oil thru the plug in the side cover of the pump. You do have to remove the plug. Nothing bad will happen. It is just a plug.When you see oil start to leak out of the banjo bolt hole , the level is correct. Re-install the fill plug & the banjo bolt. There is an inner & an outer brass sealing washer on each side of the breather tube . Be sure they are in place. Most of these pumps leak at the front input drive-shaft seal(As they aged) . for that reason, check level & fill frequently Note .. The fill plug was not there when these were new. Therefore , you will get mixed comments on its usage. I strongly suggest using the above directions. Brian

Have you got a Major or a Super Major? you mention both.

The Major does not need oil in the pump. I know people here say they put oil in but the Great God Ford and the Great God Simms say it uses diesel to lubricate it but - Hey what do they know - they only built the thing.
The Super used the same pump until 1962 when they changed to a Minimec which has a mechanical governor. This requires oil to lubricate it. This oil should be changed every time you change the engine oil.

It goes in through a 15/16th spanner size plug just in front of the injector pipes on the governor housing. There is a 1/2" spanner size plug towards the bottom on the side of the pump which is the level plug and one underneath the pump which is the drain. Drain the oil/diesel mix out and fill with engine oil to the level. The oil will always dilute with diesel, this is normal.

The noise you hear is from the drive coupling. This is normal and caused by wear on the coupling. It can be tightened by slackening the clamp bolt on the shaft at the engine end and levering the drive along the shaft.

Sorry I missed you when I passed through Madras.I called your cell number. I went and looked at that early Super Major in Redmond. It has been stripped of more parts since Spring. It is now too far gone and my time is limited. But, he said he found the injection pump for it!!! Who knows what condition it is in. If your pump is noisey it will need work.Let me know if you want to try one of mine out or buy Dan Miller's pump.His business number rings at his house in Redmond.He has parts that you can use, such as a tank, pump, shift lever, etc.

The lower half of the unit needs oil and uses motor oil, as stated by Brian and Majorman. The confusion is about the upper part of the unit on the vacuum style pumps. This is where the poppet valves and springs are.I use clean, clean, clean motor oil.But this is not as important as the lower unit.So the least one should do is the procedure outlined by Brian.

We will be coming down again sometime now that there is more snow there.

First of all what tractor do you have? You first say Major and then Super Major.

A Major does not use oil in the pump. Alright so people say they put oil in but The Great God Ford and the Great God Simms say they don"t need it but what do they Know, they only built the thing.

The same goes for most Super Majors but in 1962 Ford started to fit a Minimec pump which has some oil in the governer housing to lubricate the governer. The governer is mechanical on this pump. On the earlier pump there was just a diaphram which did not need any oil.

The oil in this Minimec pump needs changing everytime you change the engine oil. There is a filler on the top of the governer housing at the front /top of the pump, near the fuel lines, which is about 15/16th AF spanner size, a drain at the bottom which is 1/2" AF spanner size and a level plug about half way up which is again 1/2" spanner size.

Drain the oil and fill with engine oil until it just runs out of the level. If you send your mail address to majorman1@aol.com I will send you a picture from the Fordson manual.
