Button under Guages

I never cease to wonder at the questions generated by these tractors. My tractor is a '62 Super Major. I am curious what the button under the guages is for. I plan to remove the guage assembly and don't want any surprises if I can avoid them. The button doesn't seem to do anything that I can detect, but then my guages, other than the heat guage, do not work anyway. Is it some kind of reset? Mark, you should know this one.

Horn? Starter switch? I must have the economy model, complete with button but no horn, and missing anything like a starter switch. There is a keyed slot in the light switch that might have prevented "unauthorized operation" at one time, but now anyone can walk up to this tractor and start it. There is nothing, so far as I can tell, ahead of the solenoid boot on the starter motor. So, I keep it inside. When I bought this tractor it was so ugly I doubt anyone would have stolen it, but now it's too pretty to leave outside. Thanks guys, for the information. But I have to wonder, what horn on this tractor would have been louder than the engine itself?

Yes, the button on your instrument cluster is for the horn, referred to as a 'hooter' by our friends across the pond.

Well, that clinches it, Don. A "hooter" for my "scooter." Perhaps the button could be put to some other use, such as raising and lowering the radio antenna. Your tractors do have radios, don't they? All in fun. Thanks for the information, even though I don't know how I'll use it.

The horn must have been required by English traffic laws! A bike bell would have been just as useful:) Mine sounds like a dying gull with a mouth full of marbles.

It's the horn button, mine still works ('57 Major). I think it would be a good place for a starter button, by-passing the starter switch on the starting motor, which will eventually give trouble anyway. You'd engage the bendix on the starter with the lever then push the button for power to the starter, almost like flying the space shuttle!

Anyone know what it sounds like when new? Is it a 1955 Chevy or an 1955 MGT?

Interesting. What does the horn switch look like and were would the horn be located. All four tractors don't have a button switch or the horns.

Mark, the horn button is below the guages as part of the lower "wall" of the cowling that holds the guages up off the tank. It's in the middle of things, below the steering column. It's a brass button, 5/8 -3/4 " across, concave, round and, of course, spring loaded. Think large doorbell.

definitely the horn button. For some reason the horns are usually removed from the tractors. Maybe they just quit after a while and no one replaces them. I have yet to locate a Major with an operational horn.

Button? I don't have one with my gauges up on the tank? Mine is ex-USAF and it looks like the military didn't add anything that I can see except a locable cap on the tank. Does your starter have the contact switch where the plunger lever is, foward of the rubber boot?
