Shifting Issues

My '62 Super Major has the three-speed transmission with high and low ranges just as most of yours have. I am concerned about the ease, or perhaps I should say difficulty, of shifting this transmission.

I can get the tractor into the gear I want, though reverse often poses a challenge. However, I can't really imagine trying to shift this tractor on the fly. Are the rest of you able to go through the gears of these tractors while underway? Or is one supposed to put it in the chosen gear and leave it there? I'm totally new to tractors, so if this is a naive question please bear with me.

The second issue is that the shifting lever swivels in its mount. When I move it from second to third it rotates counterclockwise and the knob actually bangs into the gas tank. I have to keep my fingers clear. Is this normal?

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

These transmissions are not intended to be shifted while in motion. I am sure that it can be done by skillful synchronization of the engine and tractor speeds (double clutching!!) but is hardly worth the risk of damage. The lever should be kept from rotating by a pin at the ball where the lever pivots. Forgot whether it is fixed in the ball or the housing but breakage is not uncommon.

Thanks, Don. As usual, your information is, as our Brit friends say, spot on. I'll check the pin at the shift ball area to see what I can find. I'll be sure not to try shifting the machine while underway.

Hi Woolman. I can only change gears at a stop on my 61 FSM. Reverse is not a problem either, once stopped. I never have a problem with the shifter and the tank though. Did you come to conclusion on your injector problems or selling the Super?

Hi Mark,

The injector issue is on hold. The other day I took the tractor out and ran it for about an hour, much of the time at 2/3 throttle. By the end of that time it was running clear and
smooth, although backfiring once when I decelerated. This is turning out to be a real nice tractor. I now have a custom made roll bar on it too.

As for selling it I think I will wait a few months. I've put so much time into it and am so proud of what I've accomplished that I couldn't possibly get for it what it means to me. Maybe
by the spring I'll be tired of looking at and will want something more realistic for my property, something in the 25hp range with a loader. You're welcome to take a look at it anytime you want. If you send an email to trunorth@flash.net, I'll reply and attach some photos.

I still am coming down to get that other Super/and or it's parts. I do have an extra 1959 PM transmission if you need one. If the shifter takes so much work to get to reverse and you hit the tank the other way, it seems like an internal problem? Hey, keep the Super and buy a mini-tractor with a loader!!!!
