Trouble with Power Major

I've had this major for many years. Its allways been hard to start (diesel). When it does start it smokes alot, enough to burn your eyes from raw fuel. I've checked the timing seems like its right about 23 degrees. Also I tried to check the compression. The gauge I have needs to be held in place while cranking. There was so much compresson the gauge blew right off and some times out of my hand. Is there a special type comp gauge? Maybe one that is held in by the injector bolts?
Also while I had them out I hooked up the injectors. Should they pulse spray when I crank over the engine? Because they don't. Might my injector pump (simms) be week?
I've ordered a manual, but have not recieved it yet.
Any help or suggestions would be apprieciated.

Thanks...

Dave.

Do all four injectors do the same thing? Is the lift pump ok, does fuel flow out of the filter when you loosen a line there and crank the engine? Does your gauge go up to 300lbs?

Yes all the injectors do the same thing..nothing.
Lift pump seems to be working. If I loosen the blead screw on the out side of the filter and crank it leaks under pressure.
When I remove an injector line form the injector and crank the engine, the line spurts a small amount of fuel. I thought it should be a stream or at least a squirt.
As far as the gauge I think it goes that high but I was unable to hold it in place while cranking, to much pressure.
Thanks for responding any clue?
Dave.

Diesel compression gages are screwed or bolted into the injector opening. Pressure is too high for a hand held gage and would probably damage the gage if it did not blow off. The injectors should spray fuel when the engine is cranked, if bled. The amount varies with the throttle setting and the excess fuel control for starting. It is unlikely that a weak pump is causing your problems if good power is developed.

Don,
Thanks for responding.
This major has made good power in the past. It has recently sat for a number of years, and I have been having trouble since.
I drained all the fuel, changed filters, bled the system and ran it for quite a while. It never really ran good. I checked the vacuum lines to the govenor, one was cloged. I cleaned it out no real change in performance. I have had the injectors tested years ago. They were fine, not many hours use since. I am going to check my lift pump again, to see if its up to snuff. Any others ideas?

I would try running it at power with a good diesel injector cleaner added to the fuel. Woolman, Jerry C, and myself seem to have had a similar problem with these tractors, when it sat unused for a long time. My hunch is that something is affecting the seating of the rings thereby causing incomplete combustion of fuel. You might be able to free/seat them by running the engine, maybe not. Try a good Cummins approved cleaner and hope it clears it up without an expensive motor or injection system overhaul.

I thought of wasting an extra injector to turn into a compression gauge adapter, but don't have a diesel gauge yet to hook it up to.

Just so you know, so far my problems have been mostly the lack of compression 14 out of 15 times. That would be Toyota 2L's, 6.9 Navistar, 6.2 GM, Datsun 2.8L (one bad pump), and the Fordsons.

Good luck, hope this helps.

I think Mark 1 has the best idea. I would suspect there might also be a bit of valve sticking or poor seating also after a long lay up. Be sure your thermostat is working so the engine gets good and hot.
