I have a 1963 Super Major. Have had it for about 20 years. It has allways run what I thought was a little rich. It smells rich, makes my eyes water and leaves me smelling of unspent fuel. I keep reading about the timing. I assume you set it at the front of the injector pump? Can anyone tell me wht the timing should be?
Also I hadn't run it for about 4 yrs. This weekend I started it, and the throttle response was poor. Slow to rev up and slow to slow down. Any clues?
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Dave

Had a Super Major a few years ago; it had a Simms pump & something in front of pump came loose or...Anyway, I replaced a small inexpensive part and it quit smoking & ran much smoother. If I remember correctly, when this part would act up you'd hear a rattling sound from the pump area.

Which injection pump do you have?Pneumatic governor? If it is the earlier style, the piston could sticking in the bore and just needs a little cleaning and WD40.Check your timing to see what it is before adjusting it.The consensus I heard was 23BFTDC.Some said 21.It should be within a few degrees of it.There is play to consider in the engine drive gears and the small drive disk and the four lobes. It can make setting the timing correctly, difficult.I have no experience with the later Minimec mechanical governor style,so someone else will have to help you if yours is one of those pumps.

Mark, Thanks for the info. I think it might be the pneumatic type. It has two tubes coming from the throttle body to the front of the pump. It says Simms on the side with some numbers cast below.
Also is the timing set by adjusting the front of the pump. I still havn't looked very closely.
Thanks!
Dave.

That is right.Make sure the disc has no fore-aft or rotational play. They are inexpensive to replace.Good luck.
