A rookie is looking for advice! Anyone own one of these, and what should I be inspecting when I go to look at it? I don't have a SN, but it has both pto and 3ph. Looks well cared for. I've been told around 52hp - sound right? Lots of power for me. What kind of price? Take a peek:

Thanks for any input.

Swamp Farmer,

I just bought a Fordson Power Major for $2000.
Just a great deal for such a power house.
My tractor needs some TLC,runs good.

Check the oil presure, should be 25 to 50lbs.
Hope this helps

MJF was right - it was a Major Diesel, not a Super. There was such a JD collector gang present that the only Fordson at the auction was largely ignored. It has new sleeves, the tires (15-30)are only average with hub weights, and the exhaust has a small perforation. I was one of the few that was there early enough to hear it run. It smoked for a few minutes but sounded good the whole time. While Deeres around it went for double and triple the price (even the little cubs and ponies sold for more), I won the Major Diesel for $1500 Canadian. Pretty happy with that. But now I have to learn about Fordsons, the hp on this one, their strengths and weakness, and how to operate this monster (I own a small Case gas). I'll be writing in on occasion for advice. Hope the people here are patient with me.

Congrats!! Good bargain for a great tractor!
You will soon love the Fordson. Buy a couple manuals, and you will figure out how to operate it pretty quickly. I assume you are in Canada, so you will have to get the hang of starting it in the cold, which is not always easy. Don't give into temptation and use Ether!! Find the excess fuel button on the injector pump, make sure you have a good battery, and have some patience. Some Majors don't like to fire right up in the cold, mine included. A block heater may be a good investment also.
Have fun!

My first challenge is to get someone to float it for me - I hit a moose with our dually a few weeks back, and it's still out of commission (yeah, we're in NW Ontario). Once I get it to the property, it might do some light work skidding some firewood logs around before the snow flies. After that, it will sit until the hay fields come to life. The manuals are a good idea, especially for a rookie like me. I'll have to figure out how to get it ready to sit through the cold winter. Thanks again.

I think that is a regular Major, not a Super. If it is indeed a Major, it will not have live PTO or live Hyd. It probably won't have powersteering, unless it has been retro-fit or aftermarket. The brakes will be drum instead of disk. Lower horsepower too, somewhere around 46.
That being said, the regular major is still a great tractor. I have one, and it is the most useful little tractor on the farm. Heavy little bugger pulls like a freight train.
